G22CH SSD expansion?

Kalysh

Just bought a G22CH DS766. I was told by Geek Squad that it had an available M.2 SSD slot so I could add another SSD. They said it would take any M.2 SSD... except not the one that fits the PS5, apparently...I see there are several kinds, gens, form factors...

I also see that the specs mention that the 2nd M.2 slot is for WiFi?  (see screenshot)

I don't want to spend the money and then find out what I bought won't work.  Which M.2 SSD parameters do I need? Or are they wrong and the G22CH DS766 does not take an additional M.2 SSD at all?   I'm looking at three Amazon listings:

WD_BLACK 2TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 7,300 MB/s - WDS200T2X0E

Western Digital WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 5,150 MB/s - WDS100T3X0E

Seagate FireCuda 530 ZP1000GM3A013 1 TB Solid State Drive, M.2 2280 Internal, PCI Express NVMe, Black

I could not find this anyplace, and I've been googling and combing posts for hours. Thanks for any info on it.

As long as it is gen 4x4 it will work and the hight of the heat sink fits depending on air or water cooled I have a 1tb ps5 wd black sn850 that works just fine in my g22ch that I have upgraded from the i5 13400f 16gb 4800hz d5 ram and a rtx 3060 to a i7 13700k yea I know can't overclock 32gb 4800hz d5 ram and a dual rtx 4070 because can't go more it only has a 650w power supply hope that helps

Yes any gen 4 m.2 will work you may need a heatsink on the m.2 they get kinda hot but any heatsink that comes on western digital, samsung, crucial any of the stock heatsinks will work and for the speed it only depends on price unless you need to transfer large files then go with the higher number if you just need more storage then the read and Write speed will be fast enough to even notice a difference

And no worries hope this helps if you have any other questions feel free to ask my g22ch was air cooled at first too so the heatsinks on the m.2 will fit the only ones that might not are on the 4tb and up because they are bigger and the 4x4 just means gen4 and 4x pcie lanes sorry just more in depth terms

Hi kalysh, I'm glad this helps just a heads up if you are installing the wd 2tb and 32gb ram you will need to initialize the drive in windows and the ram will boot to a command prompt saying there is new hardware don't worry it will let you continue to the bios and just set to xmp on and then will boot to windows

Yes you are right xmp is auto and the f on the intel processor means you can't overclock and it doesn't have integrated graphics the overclock able processors have a k after the number (13700k) or if it is (13700kf) then it's overclock able but doesn't have integrated graphics and the ram hope bb doesn't charge restock fee they like to do that as for ram they did use sodimm to get the board as slim as possible I think this might be because asus acquired intel nuc and this is the out come sorry you have to go through this kalysh

So there is 2 m.2 one is operating system the other is for expansion, 2 sodimm aka laptop ram,and a desktop lga 1700 processor socket that can take intel 13/14th gen processors 14th with the new bios

Do you have to format the WD ssd? Also where is the screw to install it? The ssd doesn’t come with a screw and my motherboard doesn’t have one.

Hi Gresh8989  yes you need to format the ssd unfortunately asus didn't send a m.2 screw you have to buy one or you can take the one from the other m.2 for the time being and it won't effect the cooling that's what I did until I could get ahold of a screw hope this helps

Thanks for the quick response! Are all m.2 screws the same? I’m assuming I can order some on Amazon?

Yes all m.2 screws are the same and yes you can get them on Amazon also if you buy a lowprofile heatsink if it didn't come with one on the m.2 they sometimes have a screw with them just to kill to birds

Thanks Rob!  Mine is air cooled. So if I get a Western Digital Gen 4, in either 2TB or 1TB, M.2,  either should work? I'm not very knowledgeable so I'm not sure what 4x4 means, or if there is room for a heat sink.  So I'll skip the PS5 one that mentions the heat sink.   And will either speed work? 7,300 MB/s or 5,150 MB/s?

Sorry for the delay - I'm in the middle of "new computer transition" chaos.

Hi again Rob,  and thank you very much for the follow-up responses!  I just ordered the WD Black 2TB.  The 2TB has the higher speed, so I chose it by size instead of by speed.  Relieved to know the built-in heat sink will fit.  I also ordered a 32-TB RAM kit (2 x 16's), of the Corsair Vengeance DDR5 CL36 5600 (36 was smallest CL# available for the 5600 speed, which was supposedly the max speed for my computer.  I don't really game, I just am impatient.  I'm really grateful for you sharing your knowledge of this.
