Asus ROG G20CB-NL016T hardware upgrade

Hi,

I was looking for this information before I did the upgrade so I wanted to share the upgrades I did to my ROG G20CB. The system works and is stable.

Its a dated system I know but I figured that with the upgrade it should preform better than most budget gaming PC's with while keeping the cool case.

The original Specs are:

  • 256gb SSD
  • 1tb HDD
  • 16gb ram 2133mhz CMOS
  • 970 RTX 4gb blower
  • i7-6700 processor

For reference I got an ~2000 score on the 3D mark steel nomad demo ~19fps (4K screen)

I decided not to upgrade the processor as the best compatible ones are barley better that the i7-6700 (i7-7700K but it needs a modded bios). And single core performance is not bad even compared to most modern PC's

Storage:

The HDD was giving an error that it going to fail soon. So i replaced it with a 2tb SSD I had lying around. As a bonus I could keep my OS on the 256gb ssd which is a bitch to get to. I used a 3D printed mount to fit the small form factor SSD in the large form factor bay. ut something like this should work for those without a printer: Corsair Dual SSD Mounting Bracket (3.5” Internal Drive Bay to 2.5", Easy Installation) Black Corsair Dual SSD Mounting Bracket (3.5” Internal Drive Bay to 2.5", Easy Installation) Black

Ram:

I could not find 2133 mhz memory any more. Which is fine as faster memory will be throttled anyway. I used this memory: CT16G4SFRA32A - 16GB - DDR4 - SODIMM - 3200MHz - 2 x 16 GB. 32 gigs is the max memory the case supports unfortunately. Upgrading the memory without removing the CPU cooler is a pain but it can be done.

Graphics:

Blower cards are expensive. I found a relatively good deal for a Zotac 3070 Blower 8gb on ebay. 240 dollar. Just look it up. The card uses 2 power ports both 8 pin. The mainboard has 2 ports one 8 pins and one 6 pins. So you need a extra 8 to 6 pin power cable if you have a 970 which uses a single 8 pin power cable.

Power:

I upgraded the 220W PSU with a 330W 7.4mm AC Adapter Power Charger for Dell Alienware x17 R1 P48E P48E001 from ebay. to account for the extra usage of the GPU

So the final specs and cost are:

  • 256gb SSD
  • 2tb HDD
  • 32gb ram 2133mhz CMOS
  • 3070 zotac RTX 4gb blower
  • i7-6700 processor
  • 510 watt in power bricks

The new 3D mark 3D mark steel nomad demo score is 2950 (~30fps) which is a little below average for this GPU.

The costs (april 2025):

  • SSD: 110 euro
  • RAM 64 euro
  • graphics ~300 euro (240 + shipping +VAT)
  • PSU: ~60 euro
  • cable and SSD mount: 12 euro

Total: ~540 euro

  • Upgrading the CPU would cost around 60 euro

Getting a butget gaming PC with these specs would be difficult especially the storage and the ram. But I did this mainly because I like the case of the PC.

If i helping one person with this I am happy. As for opening the case there are a few nice videos on you tube.

Happy eastern!
