Asus G20CB Optimus

Optimus is nVidias technology for notebooks to disable the dedicated GPU when not needed and use the CPUs integrated GPU. Hence the naming of this topic.
Wanted that too: Use the iGPU for the 8 hours of office task, kick in the extra GPU for relaxing after hours.
Would save electricity, so my thinking. Never got it to work on any of my previous machines. Roundabout this post, the idea re-emerged.

Well, easy, set BIOS-setting

Advanced -> System Agent (SA) Configuration -> Graphics Configuration -> Primary Display

to

Auto

and ready to go.

Office closes, unplug the lower million watt power supply, change the HDMI connector for the monitor et voila.
A little fiddly, works though. The PC has to be shut down when changing from office to power mode. Now way I figured around that; even tried hot-plugging the power supply. Does not kill the PC (obviously, duh), but does not help you in any way, and it is dangerous, hence stupid.
With the additional M.2 SSD installed (there are better posts on this by now, even videos), and the extra CPU cooler whirl up at start

Advanced -> CPU Configuration -> Boot performance mode

set to

Turbo Performance

the booting is seconds. Who cares.

What got me especially annoyed, was the HDMI-fiddling. Plugging the million watts power plug *pf, the HDMI though *grrr
The first idea I came up with was this:

IMG_0606.jpg
Two short hdmi-cables, a longer one and an hdmi connector. Got me happy for some time. Though, after I saw at a friend of mine (just joking here, I don't have friends in IRL) switching between his million gaming stations it arouse this idea:

<camera issues here>

An automated switching device, powered by the short .5 meters hdmi. As we got to shut down the G20 anyway, who cares.

With the oompf-button at my feet, this is what I ended up with.

<...>

Perhaps this is an idea for you, perhaps you got some spare parts lying around. I thought this is an idea worth sharing. Save the planet.

The parts used and an idea

The first post I submitted on this forum got a staggering 44k+ views. That got me to this idea:

For the first 200 Euros I will definitely buy the best 250 GB Samsung SSD available at that point. That is for sure, no question about that.

Any additional funds, if that ever happens will go to the charity organisation
"Save the Porgs on Endor"

Seriously now, there is that charity, that diggs wells in poor countries, saw a documentation about them on TV. They are doing an amazing job.
If that is ever the case, reaching 200+ Euro, The Water Project will receive any additional funding.

Let me know about amazon articles you think could be worth mentioning here.

The HDMI cables I will be using

The HDMI coupling I am using

The SSD I am using (ish)

The SSD I want

SSD Cooler I am using (had heat issues, unpeel the original label of the ssd b4 installing heatsink)

Temperature optimized CPU I am planning to use

FINANCING STATUS: the author of this blog decided to break his promise, and is now slurping Mojitos at the beach of Cuba.

If this feasabillity study works, I am going to start a kickstarter.

Thinkable products are:

- G20 rear connector, to clean up the cable clutter

- bluetooth connected thingie for the VGA powersupply, including software
