Hi I've been interested in buying a rog ally for a while but really worried regarding the sd card issue and the lack of a fix from asus. Can anyone advise if it's worth purchasing please, or give me their views?

I bought a 2TB internal SSD together with the Ally and upgraded it on the first day, so I'm set. I don't plan on ever using the SD card slot.

That's my view at least. If you are someone that absolutely needs an SD card and the included 512GB internal SSD is not enough for you, then you have to take that into consideration.

Keep in mind, there are many people who have 0 issues using the SD card in their Ally.

Here's the idea, only use the SD Card as for backing up your game, and play only with your internal SSD,

So if you wanted to play Game "A", and no storage left, move the Game "B" and/or "C" to the SD Card first, then move Game "A" to internal SSD, never ever play AAA Games, with SD Card plugged in,

Or, if you don't have large SD Card, you can just use SD Card to store or play emulator, retro, or indie games, it won't fry the SD Card if you not play demanding games on it, also make sure to set your power to use only either 10 or 15 or 18 watts, not the turbo mode while playing the game from SD Card, so the heat temperature is not increasing due to it's working minimum

No sure what source is saying there's no fix, ROG has already provided a statement to say that if you do encounter issues, all you need to do is send it back and our customer service will take care of it. I understand some are hesitant to send their units back, but it's impossible to provide a diagnosis if we do not have anything to inspect.

This information is misleading. There is no permanent fix as of today. Three weeks ago, ASUS officially admitted the issue (supposedly caused by heat) and told people to RMA units with the issue. This is also why people are hesitant to RMA units as replacing the motherboard is not premanent fix for the issue and problem can still re-appear. Community is expecting some statement or permanent fix for the SD card reader issue.

Im in the same boat as you @fahdriyami, been wanting to buy one but also waiting if theres going to be any official word of what the issue is exactly.

I'd purchase one if the issue is able to be fixed via update and just hold off using the SD slot.

If it's a hardware issue that requires some sort of revision im going to hold off and just wait until it permanently fixed in future revisions.

So ended up getting one in New Zealand, SD card reader broke after 3 days. Looking at Discord & Reddit the RMA units still have the same issue. We're pretty protected in NZ, I'll be opting for a refund. I wanted it to work out but seems like this is still a big issue.

Out of curiosity, is the SD card that important to you? When you said you're in the same boat as me, did you mean that you also upgraded your internal SSD?

Please private message me your serial number and let me look into it. That should not happen after RMA, and we'll certainly investigate if anyone is experiencing that.

From what I’ve been reading this could very well be a design flaw due to poor placement of the SD reader controller chip. People running no turbo and fans at 100% have had their reader die. It may require a hardware revision to fix. We need an update from Asus.
