R6E runs single GPU on PCIex16/x8_3 slot in x8 mode with a 28-lane CPU

The manual states that this setup should run in x16 mode, per the first picture, and the BIOS GPU utility doesn't help much, as seen in the second shot.
This is with i7-7820x, which is a 28-lane CPU.
So, is there a way to get it to work at x16 in the third slot?

1. do you have anything else plugged in.
2. Unplug anything else and clear CMOS, then load optimized defaults.

This was an issue with the x99 as well and I had to clear everything, load optimized defaults then start a new to 'reset' everything. It SHOULD work if you have nothing else plugged in.

I’m not entirely sure how accurate this chart is when you look at 2 cards in SLI and it has slots 1 and 3 at x16. Thats 4 more lanes than the CPU
Should be able to do x16 so long as slot one is unpopulated. If there is any card in slot one I’m fairly certain slot 3 will default to x8.*

Unplugged everything non-critical, including the M.2 drive under the armor, and cleared everything, but nothing's changed. Installed the GPU in slot 1, and it checks out as x16, so it looks like the GPU itself is fine in this regard. Put it back in slot 3 and it dropped to x8. Turning off PCIex ports 1,2 and 4 with the onboard switches and fiddling with the related BIOS options didn't help either.

Sure seems fishy that it doesn't add up, but that's all the official info to go with for now. Like you say it should work anyway with just one slot populated, and the BIOS GPU utility kind of confirms that as well.

Gonna keep the GPU in slot 3 for now, because it looks so much better this way, and the difference between x8 and x16 seems pretty minimal anyway. But this kinda sucks nonetheless, especially with such a premium board.
