That's how I did it with a bit of lapping .

Yes it's a bit fiddly around the small transistors/SMDs. Just don't use tools, use you fingernails and take your time and scratch off the big junk. After that take some soft paper with isopropanol for example and give it a couple of wipes and the rest of the glue will come off eventually.
