R6E: Any clue on what is the expected i9-7940X overclock?

Hi,

Does anyone have a clue about what is the all core expected i9-7940X (non-avx) overclock range with the Rampage VI Extreme and an AIO?.
I know nothing is guaranteed other than the factory specs. I just can't find any reviews with this kind of data for the 7940X.

Thanks.

Thanks for the mention. To recap:

Test bench build:

  • Thermaltake AIO 360 Floe
  • NON Delidded
  • 4.6 GHz
  • 1.25 VID
  • Stablish but Fails on Aida64 Stress Test
  • hits thermal limit when stressed 90C+

Tower 900 Custom Dual Loop build:

  • EK Monoblock, Enermax 400ml pump res, Black Ice Nemesis 560 GTX (CPU Only)
  • NON Delidded
  • 4.6 GHz
  • 1.25 VID
  • Very Stable passes all stress and benchmark tests
  • 70C-80C under load 27C-31C idle

I tried 4.7 GHz at 1.275 and it would boot and run a few things but crash after a few minutes. I feel like I have room to push more voltage but I have no idea what a safe max voltage is. Can I go to 1.3 VID?

Of note, when I ran XMP for my G.Skill 3733 kit at the default 4.4 turbo CPU ID and Aida64 reported a max of 1.322 VID!!! And it was typically 1.288 VID.

Anyone have a reliable link that talks about max voltages for a i9 7940x?

I guess nobody knows yet what is safe and what is not. I would stick to 1.25 max and I think you'll be safe if you don't push the chip with Prime95 or so using all threads? You could try Per Core Usage OC mode and set a higher multiplier to less amount of threads and see how it will run.
Main: i9-10980XE - Rampage VI Extreme Encore - 64 GB G.Skill Trident Z Royal 3600 CL16 - Strix RTX 3090 - Phanteks Enthoo Primo - Corsair AX1500i - Samsung 960 PRO 1 TB + Intel 600P 1TB - Water cooling
HTPC: i7-6950X - X99-M WS - 32 GB G.Skill RipjawsV DDR4-2400 - GTX1050TI - Bitfenix Pandora - Corsair AX860 - Intel 750 400 GB + Samsung 1 TB 850 EVO
All around: i9-7980XE - Rampage VI Extreme - 64 GB G.Skill 4000 CL18-19-19-39 - Strix RTX3090 - Phanteks P500A - Samsung 960 EVO 512 GB - Water cooling

I settled at 4.7 All Cores @ 1.282 VID and 1.78 Input with G.Skill 3733 MHz Kit running at 3600 MHz and everything looks stable to me. I never liked Prime95 as its would be to stressful to see 14 cores shoot into the upper 80C range and push into 90C.

I ran countless 3DMark FireStrike and TimeSpy with no issues (Made it into the Top 75 Hall of Fame!!!). I would have just left it at 4.6 GHz @ 1.25 but for some strange reason 4.7 appears so much faster (and I really don't think it is in my head... Windows loads several seconds faster with and startup apps finish loading several seconds faster as well.

I'm stopping at 4.7 until it becomes a consensus that 1.3 or above is ok and I will try for 4.8.

I just backed it back down to 4.6GHz @1.25 & 3600 MHz RAM.

I had no problems at 4.7 until I tried a RealBench benchmark (H.264 encoding). It froze my system. After the freeze I took the time to try to go from manual OC to adaptive and I thought I bricked my Mobo. My bios would lock up after 10 seconds of entering the Bios. What I had to do was load a known stable profile within 10 seconds and load and start up the system. It was the longest hour of my life.

I've never had any good luck with Adaptive

Yeah I figured 1.275 was the upper limit if you just needed that last .025 to get it stable. 🙂

Forget about OCing intel cpus especially HEDT CPUs,no custom loop will help either .You need to do delidd first and put some liquid metal.

Interesting comment, are you speaking vicariously or have you done any testing yourself?
