" Panther Cove X " the new hope for return to be X86-64 king accelerating by Lip Bu Tan

According to Intel engineer June 2025 from Oregon USA. There are the hidden weapon that Intel developing to kill AMD Zen microarchitet on their hand already. The weapons were developing co-engineer with " Sunny Cove Microarchitect " on 2019 . However due the limited of Intel 7 node ( 10++nm SuperFin used on Golden Cove to Raptor Cove microarchitect )  it was not passed Intel Qualified Stage 1 Pat Gelsinger had been freeze the team around 2 years to testing with Intel 3 ( 5nm EUV) node but also same root failed on Qualified Stage 1 again on Intel 3 node at the end of folk.

On 2025 Lip Bu Tan the new CEO who know times is not enough to playing with the CEO chair . He urgently bring back the secret weapon on the table and began brain strom CPU architect and design both Haifa Israel and Oregon USA to put the sharpest knife as " Excaliber " to killing ZEN microarchitect.

The company bring back the killer plan to backstab all X86-64 CPU include Intel itself by Intel Advance Performance Extension APX. These feature was lead to add 16 x 64-bit wide GPRS register on Intel APX compatible CPU architect. Thus it mean Intel going to double not only GPRS from 16 units to 32 units only . They've plan to extending X87-64 , MMX , SSE , AVX/AVX2 and AVX512 register as twice as exist product starting from " Panther Cove X " project ( which is not same as Panther Lake CPU that use Coyote Cove P-Core + Arctic Wolf E-Core inside ).

Panther Cove-X had been tapeout for Xeon 7 Diamond Rapid LGA 9324 already. Not far from here when running with Windows 2026 and Application that complied to support Intel APX. Clock for clock Intel processor with Intel APX will outclass every CPU that existing now.

Thanks for sharing!

Intel has been talking about APX for years but there is still no product released... finally they are putting it in Diamon Rapids. To be honest, the doubling of registers GPRs should have been done years ago (like 10+ years ago). It's been a bottle neck for a very long time. With current architecture (with no APX) the compiler needs to juggle registers (i86/x64 requires heavy register use for indices, memory addresses, arithmetic... yeah everything) when you run out of unused once, forcing tons of PUSHes and POPs that then increases cashe and RAM pressure. Since AI is so I/O intense, anything you can do to keep more data inside the CPU (in registers) will help - like loop counters, memory addresses and indices etc.

What is truly new with what you write, is that intel is also going to double the registers for all other instruction families including AVX512 - that is fantastic news! I really hope for Intel's sake they get this done in Diamon Rapids.

I'd also like to see AMX get the same boast... with more AMX registers and flexibility to reconfigure the AMX registers, i.e. matrix and math operations for all data types, floating point and integers of all sizes, e.g. fp4, fp8, fp16, fp32, fp64, int4, int8, int16, int32, int64. And more math instructions: in addition to mat x mat dot product, hadamard product, add, sub, hadamard div, scalar x mat product, mat x vector product and so on...

...well I can wish 😂

...and meanwhile AMD is launching their Intel Xeon W and Intel HEDT X (will there be one or was 10980X the last one...) killer https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-ryzen-threadripper-9000-set-to-launch-in-july-up-to-26-faster-than-t...
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9000 (not pro!) looks to be great and a true intel HEDT killer! Intel has nothing to compete...

and for the record, I have precisely ZERO interest in the garbage hybrid core solution like Nova Lake-S with 48 crap cores: 16 P-cores + 32 E-cores (aka "atom" cores) + 4 LP-cores (aka "atom-- light" cores). I want 32, 48 or 64 P-core CPU with full functionality and ZERO crap cores.

Hi @Int8bldr 😊

Intel is ready to challenge us with new high performance node intel 18A next year. See some brief technicial node details below.

Intel 18A Node key features combined between PowerVia backside voltage power & RobbinFet silicon gate design.

Let's hope intel get it together finally. The problem is I'm losing hope... another year goes by, another promise of: "next year Intel will be finally come out with a leading HEDT product... and then nothing... another delay, another process step improvement necessary, and a new promise of "next year then..." and then again, another fail/delay and so on.

It has been the intel story since 2018 I think... 10nm, intel 7, intel 3, with Ice Lake, Sapphire Rapids, Emerald Rapids, Granite Rapids. and now again we have to wait for A18 and Diamond Rapids for a competitive HEDT that will finally put Intel back in the HEDT game...

Why is it going to be different this time? I don't blame you @restsugavan - I also want Intel to be successful - but logically there is not much evidence that things will be different this time.

Hi @Int8bldr my friend.

This time is different because AMD processor just like ZEN 5 and ZEN 6 also ZEN 7 were welcome by many PC users around the world both performance and price level when compare to Intel products. Socket longevity and many processors support bring AM4 and AM5 platform as PC standard instead of Intel camp. This happen not only desktop but also workstation and 2 procesors server class boards.

Thus Intel can not stand still like previous policy since Skylake SP to Emerald Rapid WS where Intel yet ahead on 8+ CPUs scalable. TSMC advanced process bring AMD ZEN 5 192 CPU 384 Thread also ZEN 6 256 CPU 512 Thread already. Intel Granite Rapid max core count was far behind at 128 P Redwood Cove Core or 144 E-Crestmont Core even Seira Forrest 288-E Darkmont Core that limited only 256-bit AVX support can't competting with 192 ZEN 5 Core and 256 ZEN 6 Core with can export 4 x AVX512 and 8 x AVX512 data out put at all.

Diamond Rapid with Intel 18A process will challenge AMD with 256 Core Panther Cove X with Intel APX based first time. 16 CH DDR5 12800 MT/sec MRDIMM Technology 192 PCIe 5.0 Lane CXL 3.1 comparable to 256 Core ZEN 6 SP8 Platform .
