Intel W790 Chipset block diagram.Intel W790 Chipset block diagram.

At this moment , Intel deciding to battle with AMD camp with Xeon W 2400/3400 and upcoming W2500/3500 on Q1 2024. Maybe ASUS and other vendor planning to release HEDT motherboard with W790 chipset following these series of processor .

The most interesting of Intel's plan was it the same practice on Skylake X X299 Era. There are Sapphire Rapid W , Sapphire Rapid W Refresh ( Up base clock and turbo clock also support higher speed DDR5 4800/5600+ ) . Then ending with Emerald Rapid W on 2025.

Look like Intel choose the same games like X299 Era within price war. Emerald Rapid W may cost lower Sapphire Rapid W and Sapphire Rapid Refresh again. Just like Core i9 10980XE price a half of Core i9 7980XE/9980XE.

What do you think about Intel HEDT plan above ?  Maybe those plan had a great windows to release

" ASUS RAMPAGE VII EXTREME W790/"X799*" Chipset for us all.

"X799" Chipset was my guestimate. It look like X299 and C621 Chipset act on Skylake X/ Skylake W/SP.

interesting idea.

But, I don't know if I would move from my i9 18 core CPU on x299 system to a hypothetical "x799". reasons:

  1. Platform life. The platform only has 2 years life in it before we get to Granit rapids. Saphire rapids is already 6 months old and Emerald Rapid less than a year away. So do not see the point to go for a bridge solution when my current 18 core x299 is still very potent that can easily last another couple of years.
  2. I doubt Intel match AMD core pricing? I assume intel’s price/core will still be too high at approximately $70-100/core (my assumption). Price needs come down substantially, like $33/core because that's where AMD is with their Ryzens – of course Ryzen is not a proper HEDT and does not support 100+ PCIes 5.0 or 6.0 and 8 channel DDR5 RAM, but it gives an indication of core pricing. I find it unlikely that Intel can come down to $33/core given their reported yield situation etc...
    - AMD competition looks very good today. For instance, a Zen 4 based 16-core Ryzen 9 7950X cost $530 on amazon $33/core... clear value! if AMD produce a Threadripper at $33/core, AMD has a winner. You could get a 48 core CPU for $1600! or 32 cores for about $1000 - value! So $33/core is not a fantasy it’s real…

So in other words, I do not see the point with a hypothetical “x799” The issue isn’t that W34xx or W35xx (assuming same or slightly lower price/core) is bad, it’s just incredibly overpriced compared to competition. Cost benefit analysis is just off. Fix pricing on W34xx/35xx to $33/core and intel will actually get demand for this platform otherwise I'll wait...

Yes , I think so. And Intel need to fixing their node and rush to Intel 20A node as soon as they could.

Intel Fabs and its nodes were the main cause of product delay. Most of taped-out CPU still waiting its fabs and recently nodes wafer.

With the current Intel offerings, it would really be the next ROG Dominus, rather than ROG Rampage.  The previous Dominus was for the Xeon W-3175X.

The current state of things (pricing, in particular) looks to me like Intel are not really serious about enthusiast HEDT, just trying to add a few pro-WS customers from the former HEDT segment.  I doubt that will change in the short to medium term, unless the old HEDT war with AMD properly restarts, so it's all going to be about AMD releasing a new non-pro Threadripper at a price level that makes it appealing to the old enthusiast HEDT users.
