The W890 chipset is likely to provide significant performance improvements compared to previous generations, especially when paired with Granite Rapid X processors. This could include faster data transfer rates, improved overclocking capabilities, mario 64 unblocked and better overall system responsiveness.

Today Intel launched Xeon 6 “Granite Rapids” with 128 cores for their servers (the 6980P model).

The reviews I've seen are overwhelmingly positive, especially for AI (AMX engine is strong). tomshardware, phoronix etc.

So with some delay, intel will also release a workstation version of Xeon 6 that, from what I could read, is topping out at 86 cores (all performance cores). This is the one that could make it to the W890 platform and hopefully be a made to HEDT X version that will be a worthy, possible upgrade for our X299 systems - maybe next year. Following Intel 6 "Granite Rapids", there will be a next gen: "Diamond Rapids" already coming out next year (Intel is saying - moving 4/5 process nodes in 4/5 years). So this is more than a 1 off shot.

Intel, who is in deep trouble (see share price), is aggressively trying to catch up with AMD (TSMC process) investing heavily and want to be a head pf TSMC with the Intel's18A process allowing more, more performant and more energy efficient cores surpassing AMD. This assumes Intel executes perfectly on their road map. They are betting company to catch up and be leading with 18A.

Therefore, it is a very positive to see "Granite Rapid" benchmarking well and looks to be the first attractive Intel CPU that is competitive with AMD in say 7+ years.

I will be saving up for a W890 and a X version of the Xeon 6/7 "Granite Rapid" and/or "Diamond Rapids", hoping this scenario comes out.

@Int8bldr  Have a nice days mate. 😁

Diamond Rapid AP based on Lion Cove + Microarchitect will be manufacture on 18A node somewhere ( must be Oregon Plant due Germany Plant as early plan has been suspended due Intel poor financial situation ). Intel-LGA-9324-Diamond-Rapids-Xeon-CPUs-Main-1456x906.jpg

 Diamond Rapid AP coming on OAK STREAM Platform may release on Q2 2026.

Due it support DDR6 16CH and PCIe 6.0 thus LGA 4710 and LGA 7529 platform did not support Diamond Rapid AP indeed.

 For our hope on Granite Rapid - X for HEDT series. According to Intel lastest document there are 36 / 48 / 64 / 72 / 80 Cores SKUs. it will   support LGA 4710 ( Socket E2 ) DDR5 6,400+ MT/s PCIe 5.0 136 lanes ( Intel had remove CXL 2.0 links and replace it by PCIe 5.0 lanes )   look like ASUS RAMPAGE VII EXTREME will coming with this platform.

Granite Rapid X may or maynot support new MRDIMM Multiplexed Rank DIMM technology that optimized for increse performance of DDR5 twice MT/s rate. For LGA 7529 it had already support this technology however on LGA 4710 platform intel did not confirm this to me.

Just hope Pat's the SANTA did it for us all.

@restsugavan , Thank for the update!

It looks like the Diamond Rapids will have a different socket and platform all together. that means we are not going to get multi-generational motherboards and Granite Rapids will only be a 1 generation - the only one on LGA 4710 ( Socket E2) since Diamond Rapids get a new platform/socket all together. That's the price for moving through 5 processes in 5 years (or whatever intel calls it). For me, I'll go for Granit Rapids anyway, even if it's only 1 gen platform. I rarely upgrade the CPU once built.
