Im torn between RAMPAGE VI EXTREME and EVGA's X299 Dark, that X9 cpu and board is around $1500 bit steep but thats what i want.

The Dark is the Apex less a bunch of features.

Im kind of liking the DIMM 2 slot that the others dont have.

Yeah I hear ya on that one. The progression here lately has been unreal. Z170 to Z270 and to Z370 all in about a year. FWIW the X299 should be around a bit longer. The HEDT market is slower as is the development of the CPUs. One thing to keep in mind is the Z370 is no more than the Z270 that supports the 8 gen cpus 6 core architecture. Ha vent read all that deep into them but on the surface, nothing else has changed. For that matter nothing much changed from Z170 to Z270 except full support of Kabylake and oh let is not forget the flop over hype known as optane. I bought a 32GB stick to cache my sata ssds for giggles to see if it will work. Its already proven they do precisely squat as cache for NVMe drive like the 960 pros.

On the bright side if you want to continue with more lanes and SLI greater than 2 the Z370 isnt even in the competition. Still only capable of 2 and with 2 one of the slots is X8. For the 1080 and under the X8 slot didnt really hamper the bandwidth. With the 1080Ti it doesn't kill it but it doesn't allow it to be all that it can be.

What X299 are you waiting for? ASUS is the only one that was late to the dance as always and the Rampage VI Extreme and Apex are on the market, just the extreme is scarce ATM with the Flebay weiners doing theur usual stunt of buying up all the stock then jacking the price to hell and back. I about crapped when I saw it listed there for $1600.

Thanks Guys that made my decision a bit easier , I know it sounds weird but im a Asus mobo guy but a EVGA Gpu fanboy lol

Doesn't sound weird. ASUS and EVGA both have awesome stuff. Preferring ASUS card on ASUS mobo is less likely to cause any incompatibilities from mixing brands. At least it's one less piece of RGB software you have to run, yay.

If you'd said you're a fan of motherboards made by Foxconn or HP then I'd think you're weird.

I like SuperMicro, ECS, and Biostar gaming motherboards. That's weird.
[Edit: Not afraid to mention them here, in these ASUS-owned ASUS-operated ASUS-financed forums, because I'm confident ROG folks will automatically dismiss products with "inferior" specs, lol.]

Since its gonna be nuts to have a chance to get either boards, EVGA as usually late or never, and the RVIE flying of the shelf as soon as they get on, you might have 10 minutes before they sell out anywhere, I think im gonna go with the ASrock X299 OC Formula after reading and what it can do I was impressed. even if you going with the lower lane I-7.

I don't find lower-lane i7 so bad.

Need the lanes and cores in the "HEDT" machines for getting work done. But x8/x8 GPUs and decent M.2 are enough for gaming and stuff, better really since the lightweight machines are noticeably faster.

I went a diff. route...I stuck with my Skylake I-7 6700k and got me the ASROCK Z270 Supercarrier
