Hey Gang,

I have a Maximus XI Apex that went nuts this morning. Getting all kinds of codes 61 or b1, 78, 7F, 04 as error codes that lock up the system. It was running perfect and I mean perfect for at least the last 6 months. OC worked well and stabile and no software problems other than Aura Sync.

I turned it on this morning, It automatically shut down and restarted on it's own (like bios changes) and then locked up at B1 or 61 and would not post at all. It locked up hard to the point power up/down was the only reset. I got ASUS in chat on my laptop and we did everything remove battery, clear cmos, reloaded bios etc. It was stuck solid at b1 or 61. I flipped the memOK button and was able to sloppily enter bios. The machine lost everything, RAID profile and common settings. It was like the motherboard just zeroed out it's NVRAM or something around bios. It remembered nothing. I messed with it all morning and loaded all defaults in bios and recovered raid setting. It boots but it is so unstable blue screening with completely different issues almost every time.

Did this motherboard just lose it's marbles. I was told by asus to send it in and they gave me rma number.

What do you guys think happen and do you think all the issues are MB related and not windows. when I get into windows sometimes it runs and sometimes it blue screens with page fault or memory manager issues etc..

Let me know what you think. I guess I will RMA but was trying to fix before I go through that. I need to buy another MAXIMUS XI Apex but don't see them for sale lately. Bad part is I have the Double Capacity ram and are kind of locked into that board or gene which would be a downgrade.

Thanks,

Finally got my RMA created and the board sent off. It got to the point where it just locked up on Q code 61 and wouldn't budge. I swapped out the memory with no change to behavior. The MB is done at this point. Hopefully I can get it fixed.

I was thinking moving to X299 if this can't get handled. Not really encouraged by what I am reading about I9-10980XE and X299 HEDT platform in general. Not sure what to think yet.

Hi,
3950x would be a better choice games well probably way better than any x299 series which has a stinking low cache which makes it terrible for gaming.

If your memory is 3200C14 it will work great on amd
If not C14 you'd have to search qvl list on boards.

x299 and 10 series well it's just a fire sell for nothing new to release
Intel really crapping their shorts because they couldn't undermine amd release once again but intel still looks like swiss cheese security holeware 🙂

I will have to buy new memory. I have the NEW Double Capacity memory designed for GENE and APEX this go around. It's awesome ram but doesn't work with any non DC configured RAM slots. I am not sure I can go AMD. I built and AMD system about 15 years ago and it sucked pretty bad after all the hype on it. I guess they are better now with Threadripper but I still have AMD stamped on my tough and can't get rid of the taste yet.

Plus, as some point it really doesn't matter how many cores you have if you don't have anything to use them for. Photoshop still runs the best on I9-9900K by far than any other platform. video editing is only a hobby here and is only a 2 times a year event if that ..

Nah...you're welcome...shame it wasn't an easy fix...hope RMA is fast and painless...

I went Threadripper...1920X....and now 3960X....:o

Not sure what I will move too and how soon I move there. I guess it depends on this RMA. I just want quality. It's overkill but a HEDT platform might be fine and last me a while provided the hardware does.

Good debate though. Intel or AMD??????

Ok 🙂

I am happy to report that it said they made repairs to my board and the board will be coming back to me on Tuesday the 4th. If it comes back working and ready to rock this process has been a very good one. This would be about 10 days including shipping from when I sent the board to them. Crosses fingers it's fixed and never has to see them again 🙂

I will report back on Tuesday the 4th after I reinstall everything.

Providing an update to this situation. ASUS did an awesome job receiving, diagnosing, fixing and returning my MB. Kudo's to them on this one. It's working well so far and I am very happy..

Great Job ASUS!!
