SPECTRE and MELTDOWN: Bug rocks Intel / ARM CPUs

Kinda glad I bought AMD this round. For those who don't know there is a new bug affecting just about every SKU from Intel made in the last .. ohh.. _DECADE_ or so. It's actually worse then F00F or FDIV. Only mitigation appears to castrate the CPU upward of 30%! (depending on processes).

Can Asus confirm AMD and more importantly for me, this or any AMD motherboard are not affected? If so, will there be RMAs?

Fun fact, Intel's CEO dumped stock back in November before they started issuing gags on people from even talking about it.

This is due to the driver not being present at boot, thus before hand-off, the older microcode is still present whilst the OS is loading. Best thing to do is to wait for the UEFI update.

Yeah in theory if there ever is a BIOS update especially on older machines.. lol

I just wanted to see if there was someway to get this method to work. Unfortunately there may not be a way to get windows to enable the fix on the fly. If they could fix it so it can be on the fly that would be a good workaround solution for some people with older hardware that have potentially no hope of a BIOS update.

Speculation control settings for CVE-2017-5715 [branch target injection]

Hardware support for branch target injection mitigation is present: True
Windows OS support for branch target injection mitigation is present: True
Windows OS support for branch target injection mitigation is enabled: False
Windows OS support for branch target injection mitigation is disabled by system policy: False
Windows OS support for branch target injection mitigation is disabled by absence of hardware support: False

Thank you! This part of the report looks really strange. May be, it is worth to show it to MS support and ask to modify software patch if it is possible? For example, switch software support later?

The h97 & z97 platforms were announced in May of 2014 which means for the vast majority of people, their boards are out of warranty. There will be some people who bought their boards in Jan/Feb 2015. So for the most part, the z97 and prior boards are simply out of warranty and I can't blame Asus or any company for focusing on platforms that are currently under warranty. I would imagine Asus and other manufacturers are working very hard on getting their current motherboard line (and all those on the list at the beginning of this thread) patched and fixed. After all that, THEN I can see Asus coming back to the rest of the x99 platform then MAYBE the z97. It would not surprise me if they feel that the platform is no longer supported for updates.

I 100 percent agree with this and have said as much in a previous post.

I do not mind waiting for the bios update but I want Asus to tell us that eventually at some point they are going to release a SECURITY update. It's not that much to ask for some official clarification.

The problem is, I think they already released their official statement which doesn't include the z97s. They put out every board that is going to have a BIOS update. 😞

I understand that as well. You seem to be a voice of reason in here. Maybe I am wasting my time on social media and in here trying to express my frustration/concerns.

What is the most official way for me to contact Asus and express my dissatisfaction with their lack of SECURITY updates for products that aren't even 5 years old?

Again, that list is subject to change. I just had to update one of my posts on the IME flaw because ASUS updated the advisory and added more models a month after I posted.

It has been a week. It's not time to give up yet.

Thank you for the response on this subject.

@xeromist

What is the best way to ask Asus for help on this topic? Social media? On the forums? Is there some kind of email address that I can contact with my concerns? I want them to know there are people with Z97 boards that want the security update for this issue. Thanks again.

From my experience, none of the above!

That's a shame. I've been a loyal Asus customer for over ten years now with three Asus builds.

I'm not getting any responses via social media either.

Pretty weak customer support IMO.
