SPECTRE and MELTDOWN: Bug rocks Intel / ARM CPUs

segfaulted
Level 7
Kinda glad I bought AMD this round. For those who don't know there is a new bug affecting just about every SKU from Intel made in the last .. ohh.. _DECADE_ or so. It's actually worse then F00F or FDIV. Only mitigation appears to castrate the CPU upward of 30%! (depending on processes).

Can Asus confirm AMD and more importantly for me, this or any AMD motherboard are not affected? If so, will there be RMAs?

Fun fact, Intel's CEO dumped stock back in November before they started issuing gags on people from even talking about it.

Good for you!
I would never be able to do that by myself. I have a Sabertooth Z77 and an i5 2500k Sandy Bridge.
The sole fact that you were able to do it with relative ease (easy for you, impossible for me) put Asus in a truly embarassing position.
With all the engineers, or whatever, at their desposal, is it possible we have to do something so critical on our own?
I bought, at an hefty price, an Asus motheboard because I wanted the best components, which I got, and the best support...
I guess my next purchase will be directed to something cheaper.
I would be happy to change my mind, of course.

ASUS is probably testing the board right now, but I hate it when they don't tell us anything! Nothing at all, not even a simple sentence. My next build maybe with MSI or Gigabyte board. ASUS to me like Samsung which is a slow response to the security flaws. Plus, I am not confident at all to mod my board BIOS like other people already did.

@xxxxyyyy: I can understand you. To mod a bios, you have to now work with command line and other some tools. For me, i work dialy with that no bigger problem. So you right, i also cant unterstand why asus is to slow. Yes they have warranties to their costumers, but every bios update is on your own risk.

I also unterstand SumTingWong. The information process is really  So until today, Z77 or Z87 and so on, dont know if there will get an update... After 3 months no more information about that.

@all

Yesterday i test a much, with my new mod bios. I can only say, system is now save and perfermence is the same like before! My ssds are 10-15% faster in 4K write/read with the new microcode.
My OC is also stable! In games and a 3 hour Prime95 Costum run. Same like before 🙂
I will try to test, if i can reduce the v-core.

You would think they might pull their finger out, given that they already have the FTC breathing down their neck for being slow to issue security updates.

Where is information about this?

The only FTC-vs-ASUS reports I could find online are dated from 2016.

Yes, that one, from 2016.

Looks like they got 20-years probation for ignoring a multitude of security holes in the firmware of their routers.

I'm scared to do that, and this is why I'm waiting for ASUS to release one. When ASUS going to release the dam BIOS? After WW3 ended perhaps? My Acer laptop will get the BIOS update in April.

Fair enough. Yeah, it's a mystery why Asus is taking so long. They received microcode updates to test during the beta phase, and now there's a bunch of CPU microcode in the production phase. Intel has also released the entire updated microcode archive to the public. So I have no idea why Asus is claiming it hasn't had enough time to test BIOSes with the updated microcode.

I posted on the contact us to ask for when will the bios for my board will release and just got a reply that it will be middle april or after this is for Z170-WS but i guess we will see more than that releasing by that time!

Patched & updated my X99-A board too today and works like a charm. Updating the bios took about 5min including the download of the tools. The biggest problem was to find a flashback compatible usb drive to get things started. So if you don't want to wait for ASUS to do their job just do it yourself.
Anyway this was an important lessons in life. I will never again buy any ASUS product.

Thx ASUS for nothing

I patched the old 3801 bios and updated the microcode for Haswell-E. Follow these instructions or keep on waiting.

So yeah... damn Asus.
