SPECTRE and MELTDOWN: Bug rocks Intel / ARM CPUs

segfaulted
Level 7
Kinda glad I bought AMD this round. For those who don't know there is a new bug affecting just about every SKU from Intel made in the last .. ohh.. _DECADE_ or so. It's actually worse then F00F or FDIV. Only mitigation appears to castrate the CPU upward of 30%! (depending on processes).

Can Asus confirm AMD and more importantly for me, this or any AMD motherboard are not affected? If so, will there be RMAs?

Fun fact, Intel's CEO dumped stock back in November before they started issuing gags on people from even talking about it.

The fixes were somewhat delayed because of stability concerns over Intel's microcode. However, production microcode has been available from Intel for some time now. It is quite damning that the above articles are the only official public communication we have had from Asus. No follow-up information, no revised release dates, and no production BIOS updates.

Asus are already under "special measures" for not releasing router updates in a timely manner and not keeping their customers informed about security risks.

Come Asus, it's time to produce the goods.

Hello Jerome Cornish,
Thank you for responding to Asus Product Support, this is Olga O. again and I apologize if there will be no BIOS update for the Spectre 2 issue with your motherboard. I know how important it is to solve the issue as soon as possible. Let me further assist you.

Upon checking the BIOS version version 3003 that was released from 2015/11/23.

Unfortunately, our software engineers will no longer release any BIOS updates.

I understand. I just wanted to point that out because sometimes people seem to believe that ASUS is hiding or remaining silent on these forums. I agree more communication in general would be good.

More? ANY!

Great news, everybody!
Guess who just released updated BIOSs for all their Z170, Z270 and Z370 boards?

That's right: GIGABYTE!

(ok, that's not great news for any of us... but at least I know what I'll be buying next time!)

Intel to fix Meltdown and Spectre in new chips; releasing code for older processors

Source: https://www.neowin.net/news/intel-to-fix-meltdown-and-spectre-in-new-chips-releasing-code-for-older-...

" Another thing that Intel announced today is that it's releasing microcode for more of its processors. The firm first released new microcode for the 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-gen CPUs last month, and now it says that microcode is available for 100% of all processors released within the last five years. In fact, the code available goes all the way back to Sandy Bridge, and Intel still plans to go back further."

ASUS better release BIOS update for my Z97 Maximus VII Hero board or else I will pull my giant middle finger onto their face for real.

I am tired of them being silence.
