I'm running a Samsung 970 pro 1tb as my only drive. Do I need to or would I benefit from downloading Intel rapid storage technology? Or is it only for SATA drives?

Only needed if you plan on a raid array which is actually detrimental for an NVMe drive for raid0. It only boosts the sequential read by 100-200MB/S tops because of the DMI bottle neck but the latency kills your random reads and writes which is what counts in performance as the OS and apps are all low que depth random loads.*
