Hello All,
I am a large systems engineer, specializing in computer aided manufacturing and logistics with emphasis on cloud computing. I started out my IT career in the early 1980’s and my first compute experience was with a Univac UYK-20 (you had to manually load the tape reading bootstrap with flip switches behind the front cover). And yes, I do remember card readers, zebra drives, 1400dpi reel to reel tape, 14” floppies; and a 256MB hard drive that took 3 people to install. There is a lot of you going “HUH?”.
During my career I have worn many different hats; database administrator, windows server admin, unix/linux admin, SAN storage admin and network engineer/architect (anybody remember token ring or apple talk? LOL).
I remember when the public internet consisted of a few universities that they connected together. Back then there wasn’t any email and web browsers had not even crossed anybody’s mind. In fact, there wasn’t any kind of graphics at all, only text (anybody remember “gopher”). Needless to say I have seen technology bloom!
Lately I have found a common ground with my grandson with PC gamming. I have a couple of Alienware laptops that I have used primarily for work use (good for AutoCad). These laptops were not bad for some of the earlier games but no match for the newer titles (w/ NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M). So, I decided to build a gaming desktop and take the opportunity to bond further with my grandson who is demonstrating a knack for IT.
Here is what I'm thinking of putting together:
• Motherboard - Asus Rampage V Edition 10 EATX LGA2011-3
• CPU - Intel Core i7-6850K, 3.6GHz, 6-Core Processor
• Cooler - NZXT Kraken X62 Liquid CPU Cooler, 280mm (I’ll replace the fans with something else, probably)
• RAM - G.Skill TridentZ RGB, 32GB (4 x 8GB), DDR4-3200 (14-14-14-34-2N)
• Case - In Win 509 ROG Gaming eATX
• GPU - Asus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB OC Edition
• PS – In Win C900, 80 Plus Platinum, 900W
• Disk1 - Samsung 960 Pro, 1.0TB, M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
• Disk2 - Samsung 850 EVO, 2TB, 2.5" Solid State Drive
• Fans – 2 x Corsair ML140 Pro LED Red, 97.0 CFM, 140mm Fans
• Display – 2 x ASUS PG278QR, 27", 1ms, 165Hz, WQHD (2560x1440p), G-SYNC Eye Care Gaming Screen LCD Monitor
• UPS - CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD Intelligent LCD Series UPS, 1500VA, 900W
• Keyboard - Corsair Gaming K95 RGB
