Maximus IX Code - USB 3 Ports Gone

Hey all,

So I have a i5 7600K build with a Maximus Code IX inside a NZXT S340 Elite Case. The other day I decided to connect a NZXT Internal USB hub so I could use the USB 2.0 ports on the front panel. Anyways, after I connected the Internal USB hub for the first time and started the computer it would not power on and if I'm not mistaken I smelled a little bit of something burning...:(

Disconnected the USB Hub and powered on computer no problem, except one thing: none of the rear USB 3.0 ports work now. They do not respond although windows sees them66004. Tried all the tricks I could think of uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, nothing. Now I am wondering if I should reinstall the chipset drivers or is there another possible fix for this? Yes I realize the NZXT internal hub may have damaged my motherboard but everything seems to work fine expect for the USB 3.0 ports.

Any thoughts?

Do you have any BIOS settings to enable/disable these ports?

USB enumeration failures are usually caused by software/driver issues.

But non-enumerated USB devices (so called "USB decorations" like this LED Lamp) can still leech up to 5V@100mA without proper enumeration, at least if everything meets proper USB standards. Do these ports still provide power to such "decorations"? And does the burning smell recur or persist when they're plugged in?

Thanks for reply. I have a mechanical keyboard with keys that do light up when I plug into any USB 3.0 port, but none of keyboard controls actually work. Mouse doesn't respond either or flash drive, etc., when plugged into USB 3. No burn smell since my very brief experiment with the NZXT USB 2 hub. The bios does have "Single USB Port Control" setting which allows me to enable or disable individual USB ports., but they are all enabled.

USB 3 ports still unresponsive after resetting.

So the "burnt" USB3 ports do receive power.

I'd test USB3 devices to confirm or deny that it's software/driver issues. With a fresh Windows install, ideally Win8.x (which now has "fully" matured and debugged USB3 drivers, lol), and/or a USB3-capable linux.

A USB hub could burn out an upstream USB controller if total combined power draw exceeds controller/port rated 500mA (or whatever). A burnt out controller would lose both of its ports. But I'm not sure how you'd lose three ports (not two, not even four) ... at least not without having a burnt segment of PCB trace which also burnt adjacent traces ... or a cracked mobo with broken PCB traces ... I would visually inspect all the circuit paths between the ports (on the rear I/O) and the main VRMs very closely, on both sides of the PCB.

Just curious, did you have any difficulties installing the mobo backplate into your chassis cutout? Were you forced to twist or flex or force anything to make it fit into place?
