Is renaming BIOS file nessesary if I am updating BIOS from within BIOS setup?

Hello,
Just installed my new 7700K on the Asus Maximus IX Hero, booted successfully to BIOS and now I am going around BIOS settings.
I have downloaded the newest BIOS from here:
https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-IX-HERO/HelpDesk_Download/
to an empty flash drive

The user manual says to rename to M9H.CAP

Is that necessary to do? I might think they want user to rename it so the flash BOIS function from USB without CPU in socket to recognize the file?
But I am at the BIOS setup and I can use the utility from inside the current BIOS.

Thanks

No, not necessary for using EZ flash utility in BIOS....

Hi mahanddeem

As far as I know you only need to rename the bios file if using the bios flashback feature, if using ez flash you don't have to rename it.

I normally use the automatic bios update, no usb flash drive needed.

Thank you both guys.
Last inquiry, which one is better to reset CMOS after flashing, physical button on back of motherboard OR F5 and load safe defaults from inside BIOS?
Thanks again

Either is fine to do, they both do the same. 🙂

Reset to defaults before flashing the bios.

Clear cmos will also wipe any profiles saved

Clear CMOS before the flash. Clear CMOS will not wipe profiles...but flashing the BIOS will. This is to be expected...the exact same settings on a different BIOS should not be expected to work...though they sometimes do...BIOS change should really be treated as a clean sheet for OC etc.

I thought it wiped my profiles on my board, maybe it was just the bios update...thanks

I kind of have a similar dilemma. Because I USB flash my motherboard with the latest bios but I didn't realize that it was telling me that if Using USB BIOS Flashback, please rename to "M10C.CAP" after download. I didn't rename the Bios bean to "M10C.CAP" and I went ahead and did the update without doing it and I just kept the name that the bio's bean had when downloaded. Now the question that I have is did the Bio's update install properly because I didn't rename it like it was asking me to do. Do I have to flash my motherboard again with exact same update and this time make sure that I rename the bio's bean before making the update? Thanks
