If you do not have the hardware that you are reading about it is really difficult to make sense of stuff. May I suggest that in place of reading and confusing yourself why not just ask some general questions at first that you would like to know about and that way we can slowly build up your knowledge base. And others will be able to learn with us along that journey.

Get some computers off the side of the road and play with them. You won't be as scared about flashing bios and randomly changing settings and installing new drivers and OS etc if it's a free pc from the side of the road.

You have to fill me in here, free from the side of the road? What is that?

Maybe a bit of Australian lingo 😉
In Australia we have a kind of verge side pickup for certain kinds of large trash that you can't throw out in the weekly trash/recyclables. Most people call it "bring out your dead" because it's usually old stuff that doesn't work. Now days a large portion is old computers. Whenever I drive through an area in bring out your dead season I have an overwhelming urge to grab as many of these poor computers, that are otherwise destined for landfil or melting, as I can. Sometimes you find nice things like a really nice viewsonic monitor or an old 8800gt, but mostly the computers are good only for ram salvaging, or trivial uses.
In Australia this is far more socially acceptable than dumpster diving 😉
Does other countries do this kind of thing? Or do you have to take it to the tip yourselves?
