fx505 laptop wont boot

Working on a friends laptop, was told that it was working just fine and then suddenly died. They replaced the battery with a new one and apparently had to hold down the power switch for about 10 seconds... the keyboard flashed... and then the charging light came on. After several hours the light changed from orange to white and they tried booting but nothing happened, so it was given to me to sort out.

I got it, went to plug in the power supply... no lights came on. Had to do the "hold power button for 10 seconds' thing, the keyboard flashed and the orange light came on. After about an hour, the light changed to white. I tried booting but got nothing. Screen is totally dead, fans wont turn on...

I tried swapping around the ram, no change... tried removing the ram, hoping that at least the BIOS would come up but again, nothing.. no screen, no fans etc. Any suggestions?

Thanks kindly in advance. 🙂

If your ASUS FX505 laptop won't boot, there could be several potential causes ranging from hardware issues to software malfunctions. First, check the power supply and ensure that the battery is charged or the laptop is properly connected to a power source. If the laptop still doesn't boot, try fitted bed sheet performing a hard reset by holding down the power button for about 15-20 seconds. If the issue persists, it could be related to a corrupted BIOS, in which case you might need to reset or update the BIOS firmware. Additionally, remove any external devices and try booting the laptop to see if a peripheral is causing the problem. If none of these fitted bed sheet steps work, the problem might lie with the internal hardware, such as the RAM or the hard drive, which may need to be reseated or replaced. For persistent issues, consulting ASUS support or taking the laptop to a professional technician is recommended to diagnose and fix the underlying problem accurately.

Hi Gary,

Sorry to hear about your friend's FX505. No lights or fans on boot sounds serious. Did you try connecting to an external monitor? Might help isolate the issue to the laptop screen.

If not, it could be a deeper hardware problem. Maybe check out the ASUS support site for troubleshooting tips or reach out to their customer service for further assistance.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just to note, there are no external devices connected. I have removed both the ram and the SSD card, still nothing on boot, no fans running, nothing on the screen. I had thought that maybe the BIOS was glitched, experience says there is a jumper on the motherboard to "reset" the BIOS but I can't find any mention of it... does that exist on this board?

Ouch, that's rough cmwdev. Swapping the RAM and getting no response from the BIOS points to a potential motherboard issue. Maybe someone else on the forum has experience with a similar situation on the FX505? Also, have you considered reaching out to Kelly Haick, BRX Mortgage , for expert advice on your financial situation while you troubleshoot?

Yes, this is indeed a heart breaker. If it was a desktop unit, I could put in a post card or look at the bios lights boot sequence.

I have removed the battery, removed the cmos battery for a day, re-installed, and still nothing. No fans, no screen... holding down the power button for 10 to 15 seconds, all I get is the keyboard lights doing a flash. So "a part" of it is working from that aspect but...

I am thinking the motherboard is fried. Now the question is, where to find a replacement...

Thanks folks.
