Do I have to use windows 10?

Hi all; Currently have an ROG G551jm and am thinking of buying the Strix Scar II. In preparation for this I have upgraded my windows 8.1 to 10 but I have to admit, I am not liking it very much. So now to the question: if I buy the scar II can I install windows 8.1 and have everything work fine, or does the laptop NEED windows 10 to function properly?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I would like to know before dropping $2K.

I do find 10 is slower with just about everything, and it is a fresh install with new partition, which I always do when installing to make sure no left overs are left behind from the previous system. Don't misunderstand, I don't dislike 10 because of that, I mean we are talking 1 second vs 1.5 second for example, I just find the programs I run, which are older, work much better in 8.

Ah, the nostalgic gamer. That's a much better reason for your request. I have a bunch of games that I would love to revisit but they are not supported on anything above XP. Great TRUE strategy games, as well. None of this RTS garbage that caters to the simple mind. Some of these so obscure if I could remember the titles you'd give me a look of such forceful bewilderment an owl would be jealous.

You can give it a go and see if all required drivers make your devices function as intended. If not, throw Windows 10 back on and say goodbye to your old friends. Be sure you understand all warranty policies in case something goes wrong with a new product.

Does compatibility mode ever work, doesn't seem so to me.

Not only has it not fixed anything for me I'm not sure if it is really doing anything at all.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station…

Thanks for all the replies. I finally got Empire Total War working (pain that was) and War in the East. Really my only desire for upgrade is to buy Trainz 2019, but geez, spending $2k for a $70 game, will have to think on that one eh.

I agree, not a fan of FPS, I watch them on UT and wonder "why?", guys just running around blasting away, and other guys using cheats to blast away. I use to drive a tank and watched "world of tanks" on UT, there is nothing 'tank' about it.

Cheers all.

If you want to tank you War Thunder, you don't World of Tanks.

War Thunder gives you the option to play in arcade, realistic and simulator modes. The first one is for children much like WoT itself, but in realistic you have to aim independently, with no AI reticle advising whether you are hitting a critical area or how far you should lead a moving target at range. That and one shot one kill leads to a frustrating, but more satisfying playing experience. You can also try simulator mode. But I think you'd rather listen to your wife after a bad day at work when she's menstruating.

Today I gave up on Win10. Every day I try to play Empire Total War I have to spend 30 minutes messing with 10 to get it to run, then the next day it won't run again and once again spend all that time with it. I have decided to go with an Asus desktop build since I can get a far stronger computer for $1K less, and all the parts come with 7 and 8.1 drivers. Also don't like the way 10 forces downloads on you "you WILL use Realtek!" and yes I have used every tweak and reg edit out there making 10 private and trying to fix the issues, just pure garbage.

I have to be fair to be fair, it wasn't Win10 causing the crashing, it was a mod for the game. The mod would run correctly on first install, but when enabled the next day (have to enable each time to use) the game would crash; had the same symptoms on Win8.1. Also T:ANE ran much better on 10, much less stutter on higher settings so when I do my new build I will consider 10 again.

Thank you all for the replies and interest.
