Tuf Gaming 3080 ti on x570E Gaming - "VGA" mode issues

Strange issue on an upgrade to an existing PC, Asus X570E Gaming, Ryzen 9 5900, 64GB. It has had an MSI 2060 Super in it all working fine, with DisplayPort connection into a Samsung CRG90 49" widescreen.

I just installed the Tuf Gaming 3080 ti and while it boots, it will not initiate "VGA" mode on its way through BIOS, and the motherboard retains its white "VGA" boot issue LED lit all the time. If I connect over HDMI to the Samsung same issue happens.

If I connect to an old LG 27" monitor I have it works fine, initiates VGA mode, BIOS is accessible, and the PC boots fully without the VGA fail white LED lighting up.

I'm at a bit of a loss to work out what the issue is, whether it's the card, the motherboard or the monitor. Anyone got any ideas?

By the way, have you reported this to nvidia?

Only on the forums at https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/geforce-graphics-cards/5/457915/asus-tuf-gaming-3080-ti-...

If there is another way I don't know?

Advice from Asus support:
"caused by monitor resolution being too high, the card will only work once booted into Windows. Until Nvidia patches this to accept that video mode, there is nothing we can do"

Well, this is not the case and Asus knows it. There is a problem with 3080 Ti cards and DisplayPort 1.4 - many people reported similar problems (no screen during boot) on modern monitors and companies such as EVGA or Palit acknowledged it and released VBIOS fixes (you can read more in the links attached below).

The only thing we can do is wait for Asus to release a fixed version of the VBIOS (I am also an owner of TUF 3080 Ti with the same problem).

I have logged a job with Nvidia support at https://nvidia.custhelp.com/ and they have asked some further questions... I've provided all of the troubleshooting I have done, and have pointed them at about a dozen online threads with people having similar issues with 3080Ti / high resolution monitors. Will see what they come back with.

In Nvidia forums a user posted:
"Problem solved.
I asked Palit for support and they provided me with a new BIOS. It was a very quick response.
I think all VGA manufacturers should learn from this response. "
So ASUS, where is that BIOS?.

Thanks for the update. Do you have a link? I'd like to share it with my card's manufacturer.

Update: found it

Would have been great if Asus did the same 🙂
They bounced me to Nvidia, per my comments above... and Nvidia are now "reviewing at level 2 support".

Nvidia are now saying Asus need to sort this out. So we are in the classic finger-pointing exercise. Wonderful...

Here is another report:

https://forums.evga.com/RTX-3080-Ti-FTW3-Ultra-VGA-Light-on-MOBO-but-boots-to-Windows-no-BIOS-screen...

It could be an Asus MB problem. Has there been any reports on a non-Asus MB? On the other hand it only happens on the 3080Ti (any AIB).

Update: multiple motherboard makers, multiple GPU AIB, multiple monitors are reporting this. The only thing in common is 3080Ti. Clearly this is an nvidia problem.

Yeah, would appear so. I've got jobs logged with both Nvidia and Asus, they have been pointing the blame at each other so far, but now seem to be taking it a bit more seriously - both now telling me it's been escalated for further investigations.

Update: it is a DP 1.4 problem with the 3080ti

I got this from nVidia:

> NVIDIA QA is aware of this issue and engineering is working to resolve the problem with Founders Edition cards as well as assist partner card manufactures such as EVGA.
