ROG Stryx Z690-E: A corrected hardware error has occurred

The warning message below appears in my Windows 11 system event log a few dozen times per day. This started immediately after my initial build a few weeks ago.

A corrected hardware error has occurred.

Component: PCI Express Root Port
Error Source: Advanced Error Reporting (PCI Express)

Primary Bus: Device:Function: 0x0:0x1A:0x0
Secondary Bus: Device:Function: 0x0:0x0:0x0
Primary Device Name: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_7AC8&SUBSYS_86941043&REV_11
Secondary Device Name:

Could this be a driver issue? Maybe a hardware problem with the motherboard? I have the latest Intel Chipset drivers installed according to Armoury Crate.

Thanks.

This is the same issue we have with Z690-A here at https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?126698-ROG-Strix-z690A-Gaming-WiFi-WHEa-17-Errors

Disabling ASPM or setting PCIE to gen3 may remove WHEA 17 errors but I get numerous different errors instead then, the pc eventually crashed.

As a temporary solution, I unplugged my RTX 3080ti and use igpu only, it's solid stable.

What do you think about have you also tried disabling PCH PCIE Express ASPM in bios?

Hi phantomapollyon,
Do you also get WHEA 17 errors but without any issues?
Have you also tried disabled PCH PCIE Express ASPM in the BIOS settings and haven't gotten the errors?
Is the bios version 0702 and have restored bios to all default settings?
May I have the information below?
- the serial number of the motherboard via PM
- the brand and the model name of your CPU, RAM, VGA, PSU and the PCIE devices(in which slots)
* Please check the specific model name of RAM such as G.SKILL F5-6000U4040A16GX2-TZ5RS.
- OS version & OS build
Thank you.

I am seeing the WHEA 17 errors consistently unless I turn off PCH PCIE Express ASPM in the BIOS, which I'm not really interested in doing. I AM seeing an occasional blue screen, but only while the system sits idle for a long time and not while it's under heavy use. No issues in graphically intensive games or heavy CPU/GPU load. The BIOS version was updated to 0702 before the Windows 11 install, and I have tried default BIOS settings with no change in behavior/errors. Details you requested below:

- 12900k, CORSAIR Vengeance 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 5200 (PC5 41600) - CMK32GX5M2B5200C38, EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 T2 PSU (220-T2-1600-X1), EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING (24G-P5-3987-KR) (top PCI slot)
- Windows 11 Pro 21H2, Build 22000.348 (fresh install already tried, no change)
- I sent over the board details via PM

Hi Aiiv2022,
Do you get random BSOD and crash on bios 0707? Did you got random BSOD and crash after fresh OS install and didn't install any drivers or apps?
Have you restored bios to all default settings but still got random BSOD and crash?
May I have the information below?
- the serial number of the motherboard via PM
- the brand and the model name of your RAM, PSU and the PCIE devices(in which slots)
* Please check the specific model name of RAM such as G.SKILL F5-6000U4040A16GX2-TZ5RS.
- OS version & OS build
May I have more details about the scenario when you encounter random BSOD and crash issues?
- The error message while get BSOD
- Which drivers and apps(the names and versions) you installed?
- the bios settings and system settings
- How often you encounter BSODS or crash issues? Which apps do you run and you often get BSODS or crash issues?
Thank you.

Turning off APSM for PCH PCIE Express makes the PCH Temp about 10°C highers for me. Thats not a good work around.

@STARRAIN

To shorten this up. It has nothing to do with CPU, RAM, PSU or Windows. I tried a lot of different configurations for CPU, RAM, PSU and clean Windows (10 and 11). Its definetly the Board in combination with using the PCIE 5.0 16x Slot.

Hi phantomapollyon,
Thank you for your reply.
If you turn off PCH PCIE Express ASPM in the BIOS, do you still have occasional blue screen?
How long do the system sit idle and you sill see blue screen easily?
Was there any error message while got blue screen?
Thank you.

With PCH PCIE Express ASPM in the BIOS disabled I have not seen the blue screen, and have not reverted to test otherwise. There were no preceding error messages any time before the blue screens occurred, just those screens themselves.

Hi rolloff,
Do you only use PCIEX16(G5)_1 slot with the graphics card and no other PCIE devices installed?
I'm afraid our tech team need the configurations for further checking. Could you please help to provide the following information?
If you have random hangup, BSOD, and straight crash issues when get the WHEA 17 errors, did them still occur with APSM for PCH PCIE Express disabled?
If you use bios 0702 and restore bios to all default settings, does the WHEA 17 errors also appear?
May I have the following information?
- the serial number of the motherboard via PM
- Intel chipset version
- the brand and model name of RAM and PSU
[Please check the specific model name of RAM such as CORSAIR CMK16GX4M2R5133C20 (Ver 5.33)]
- OS version and OS build
Thank you.
