ROG Strix z690A Gaming WiFi WHEa 17 Errors

Swapped my fully functioning 3090RTX, 9900K, Z390 Gigabyte Designare setup for a brand new Z690 and 12900K rig.

After swapping all components over to the Gaming Wifi MOBO and 12900k combo, install WIN 11 and I get thousands of WHEA errors for ven_8086&dev_ 460d&SUBSYS_86941043&REV_02

I also get random hangup, BSODS, and straight crashes.

I'm a day of frustration away from RMA. I swapped back to old system and all works perfectly with 9900k and Z390 mobo, so the only possible hardware issue is the mobo or CPU....I guessing this is a mobo hardware component issue.

PCI ID Repository suggests it is a 12th Gen Core Processor PCI Express x16 Controller #1.

Device manager showed no issues with any hardware.

I am working on reinstalling everything to include a brand new 980 PRO SSD as the boot drive that is PCIE 4. Previously, I ran a 970 EVO PLUS boot drive.

Also, starting off with igpu, so far no errors.

After I update all the drivers, confirm no errors, I will reboot and plug in the RTX 3090 and see what happens.

All worked fine with no errors for the igpu including stress tests. The second I plugged the RTX3090 in I immediately started getting non-stop WHEA 17 errors.

Placing the PCIE x16 into GEN 3 mode fixes the errors. I also turned off link state power management.

How do I turn off ASPM in BIOS?

Praise the PCMR gods.

I had to disable native power management and ASPM in bios then disable link state power management via desktop power options.

Now no errors and running gen 4!

I should get paid for trouble shooting this for you all.

Update: nope, getting new crashes and artifacts with those settings disabled even though the WHEA 17 error went away.

I put all those settings back for ASPM and Native Power Management. Now back to running at PCIE 3 no errors.

Only thing that works to rid of WHEA 17 error is putting it to gen 3 or turning off native power management. ASPM has no impact on the WHEA 17 error, only Native Power Management turned to disabled. However, turning off native power management in BIOS results in artifacting and lower gpu performance...absolutely crushes GPU performance in 3dmark.

Very frustrating.

Trying MSI board tomorrow.

I don't have much more time to deal with this, next step unless you find a solution for me and the others running into this issue is returning my MOBO to the vendor and trying one from MSI.

Bottom line is that the only thing that prevents the WHEA 17 errors is disabling native power management in BIOS. Doing that crushes GPU performance and led to some artifacting when ASPM was also off. Through trial and error I found that ASPM has no impact on the WHEA 17 error I am having and if I leave it that way the errors in the pci bus eventually result in a crash.

With Native Power Management disabled I was able to run my RTX 3090 at GEN 4 PCIE, but it crushes GPU performance for some reason with native power management off. 3DMark scores plummet having that feature off, CPU performance stays the same.

Only thing right now that works to prevent WHEA 17 without crushing GPU performance is running the PCIE slot at GEN 3 manually in the BIOS.

This is incredibly frustrating. Next I am going to try a MSI MOBO to see if I still have the problem. Absolute pain in the ass since I'm water cooled and have to flush each time I do swaps like this.

I have absolutely zero issues on my Z390 board with the same components on a 9900K.

I have exactly the same issue, Strix Z690-A, 12900K, 3080ti.
Random BSOD with different error codes, hundreds of WHEA 17 in the event logs. Once I unplug my 3080 ti and use igpu, everything becomes stable and works fine .

The error can be reproduced so easily, I feel it's not acceptable that ASUS QA team didn't catch it.

The WHEA 17 error message is under investigation.
However, our tech team didn't encounter hangups, BSODS or crash issues.

May I double confirm hangups and BSODS occur after fresh win 11 install and didn't install any drivers or apps? Did hangups and BSODS occur while stay in windows screen?
May I have more details about the scenario when you encounter hangups, BSODS or crash issues?

- the OS build
- Which drivers and apps(the names and versions) you installed?
- the bios settings and system settings
- How often you encounter hangups, BSODS or crash issues? Do they occur often while running which apps?

Do you get random BSOD and crash on bios 0707? Did you got random BSOD and crash after fresh OS install and didn't install any drivers or apps?
Have you restored bios to all default settings but still got random BSOD and crash?
May I have the information below?
- the serial number of the motherboard via PM
- the brand and the model name of your RAM, PSU and the PCIE devices(in which slots)
* Please check the specific model name of RAM such as G.SKILL F5-6000U4040A16GX2-TZ5RS.
