ROG Strix z690A Gaming WiFi WHEa 17 Errors

Swapped my fully functioning 3090RTX, 9900K, Z390 Gigabyte Designare setup for a brand new Z690 and 12900K rig.

After swapping all components over to the Gaming Wifi MOBO and 12900k combo, install WIN 11 and I get thousands of WHEA errors for ven_8086&dev_ 460d&SUBSYS_86941043&REV_02

I also get random hangup, BSODS, and straight crashes.

I'm a day of frustration away from RMA. I swapped back to old system and all works perfectly with 9900k and Z390 mobo, so the only possible hardware issue is the mobo or CPU....I guessing this is a mobo hardware component issue.

PCI ID Repository suggests it is a 12th Gen Core Processor PCI Express x16 Controller #1.

Device manager showed no issues with any hardware.

Hello.

> Do you get WHEA 1 error (hard lockup) on bios 1304 with bios all default setting?

Yes, that is correct, sir. Issues straight out of the box, updating the BIOS, the problems persisted.

>Although WHEA 1 error (hard lockup) is resolved by locking PCIEX16(G5) to Gen3 and Disabling all PCI-E Toggles (Clock gating etc.) but XMPI/XMPII also fails at the rated speed?

XMP is not stable without the fixes and perfect with them. My Computer has been stable for 36 hours now.

>May I know more details about how you adjust bios settings and XMP?

I am just selecting the profiles. No manual overclocking of RAM and no other OC's or tweaks applied.

>Which SSD do you install OS in? May I have the firmware version of the SSDs?

Top NVMe. M.2_1. Firmwares are the following:

M.2_1 970 Pro Evo Plus 2TB 2B2QEXM7
M.2_2 970 Pro Evo Plus 2TB 2B2QEXM7
M.2_3 Intel 660p 2TB 004C
M.2_4 Intel 660p 1TB 004C

Hi iStanCFC,
Thank you for your reply.
How often get WHEA 1 error (hard lockup) on bios 1304 with bios all default setting? For example, boot in to windows and idle about 30 minutes?
May I have the following information?
- the serial number of the motherboard via PM
- the bios settings(.CMO file) about locking PCIEX16(G5) to Gen3 and Disabling all PCI-E Toggles (Clock gating etc.)
- the specific model name of your ram such as TDPPD432G3600HC16GDC01
(Please take a picture of the sticker label on the ram.)
- OS version and OS build
Thank you so much.

mini update: I flashed the bios to 1304 six days ago, and kept all the PCI stuff toggled off. I left the PCI speeds to auto and on day 4 I got a whea 1 error. No freeze, but I went ahead and rebooted and set the PCI speeds to Gen 3 in the BIOS. So, now the waiting game starts to see if it acts up again. I will update on the freeze issue when I know more (probably about a week).

UPDATE 2: About 20 minutes after originally posting this, it froze up. Nothing showing up in the event viewer either. I'm also still getting the brief random sound dropouts.

Can someone try with core isolation disabled in Windows ? With core isolation off I had 6 days without a freeze, I turned it back on and got a freeze after a day, now it's been 5 days since I turned it back off and still no freeze, I don't know if it's just a coincidence.

I'm on the bios 1304 with PCI Express Native Power Management disabled (because I still get a lot of WHEA 7 errors) BUT with ASPM and PCI Express Clock Gating enabled and it seems stable after a lot of hours on Elden Ring...

I was in contact with Sterrain with exactly the same Errors on the Apex z690 in December. I reported everything and until today nothing has changed. Only this ****y workaround with all Power Savings disabled. I reported to him aswell that the PCH goes up to about 10-15 Degrees Celsius doing that. They just ignored it.

ASUS has failed with this Gen of Boards.
In addition to everything, it has now been proven that the RAM OC on the first apex z690 boards is completely broken. newer rev boards from 2022 can clock much higher. asus rejects all rmas regarding this. That's just sad for a board I paid 700€ for.

Well,
I have not had a single crash or WHEA-Logger with all my settings default (XMPII) with disabled power management in Windows:

Advanced Power Management options: PCI Express -> Link State Power Management -> Setting: OFF. [I just set my power plan to High performance, but that setting should do]
Nvidia Control Panel: Manage 3D settings -> Power Management mode -> Prefer Maximum Performance.

Give it a whirl and I bet you're stable.

Also, this issue is not exclusive to ASUS. My guess is that all test environments all have the above settings set.

Yep, in times of ridiculous energy prices and an ever-growing climate crisis, let's switch off all energy-saving measures as a workaround. That's a great solution. Welcome to 2022.

Let's be quite Frank here, though. You've literally spent €700 on a board with its advanced feature set and VRM management ..for.. its power. You are using the most powerful and hottest chips on the market and Overclocking them. Let's not kid each other here.

Also, the power "saved" is negligible. You will barely see a difference.

If it bothers you that much, just change it to power saving mode and just turn the PCI Express option off.
Who wants to lose performance on their GPU anyway? Makes no sense.

So far the latest bios has been very stable for me. I am on the E revision of the motherboard. I set my bios back to default, including all of the power saving and gating options. So they are turned back on for me. I am running default with only XMP I turned on, and haven't had any crashes or issues in several days. I can crank prime95 for a while with no instabilities.

Hi Prong,
May I double confirm you have whea 1 error or freeze and the brief random sound dropouts on bios 1304 with bios all default settings?
Did it also occur when you only browsing the chrome or at the desktop and there is no apps running?
May I have a video about the brief random sound dropouts? Does it occur with analog audio output? Have you tried other speaker?
How often does it occur? Does it occur when running the specific apps or playing the specific video or music?
Please update ALC4080/ALC4082 audio FW from our support site.
Thank you.
