Asus Zenith II - CPU Code 07 after PSU off -> on ?

cgidesign
Level 7
I have the Zenith Extreme II (non alpha) with 64 GB ram and 3960x Threadripper, bios 1402.

PROBLEM:
I shut down the PC normaly after using Windows.
Then I switched off the PSU.
After switching the PSU back on two hours later I got message CODE 07 and orange LED is on.
I can't enter bios anymore and system is not booting.

History of issue:
After buidling the PC I initially got Code07 "Check CPU".
After some back and forth I was able to enter the bios and set standard values for the ram (3200 CL 14).
CPU is at default (no overclock).

After this initial setup the PC worked without issues:

  • memtest pro above 100% - no error
  • Aida64 stress (including AVX heavy) - no issue
  • Temps - no issue
  • Powersupply - no issue
  • Reboots - no issues (no automatic resets or ram training cycles)
  • 3D Rendering either GPU or CPU - no issues
  • WHEA errors - 0
  • etc. no issues

It just worked.

But now - after switching the PSU off and on - I can't boot anymore (even though board, fans, rgb, onboard display are on).

What I tried so far:
- testing ram slots: only 1, two, all four -> still code 07
- cmos clear - still code 07
- bought new ram and tested with one, two slots -> still code 07
- flashed to bios 1502 - still code 07
- flashed to bios 1102 - still code 07
- switched between the two bios chips - still code 07
- checked cables etc. - still code 07
- unplugged PSU and took out cmos battery over night - still code 07
- took out all ram: - result "memory test"

Nothing works. I now have a dead system.

Again: the only change was to switch off the PSU and back on. Until this change everything was working without issues.

Components:
Board: Zenith Extreme II (non alpha)
CPU: Threadripper 3960x (no overclock - water cooled)
Ram: 64 GB (4 x 16 - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - F4-3200C14Q-64GTZR)
GPU 1: RTX2080Ti FE (no overclock - only for compute - no display attached)
GPU 2: RTX 4000 (no overclock - display attached)
PSU: Corsair AX1600i

I appreciate any help because this is my PC for work; I use it as a freelancer doing graphics and 3d work. That's the reason I bought expensive components with good reputation.

I also opened an asus support ticket - second day now with no answer. I fear I will get the ususal automated standard reply telling me I should clear cmos.

EDIT:
Found another thread describing similar issues but with no solution:

Hi cgidesign,
If you don't have other PSU and CPU to cross check, please send the motherboard for RMA for further examination.
Thank you.

Thanks, should I wait for an email reply from the support (I opened a ticket there)?

And do I need to contact the shop (ebay in this case) or send to Asus?

Made a last test with only one GPU, Ram, one M.2 and CPU. Still code 07. Unfortunately no other CPU or PSU to test.

Hi cgidesign,
Please also check if the CPU pin or CPU socket is dirty or the CPU pin is broken.

Thank you.

Got an Asrock board now. With that one system is booting normally (same components).

Should I wait for an email reply from the support (I opened a ticket there - still waiting for reply).

And do I need to contact the shop (ebay in this case) or send to Asus?

Hi cgidesign,
Please consult the dealer first and consult them about RMA.
Thank you.
