Asus dark hero startup issue ?

karlosfandango

Hi all
I have a Asus Crosshair VIII DarkHhero ...with an AMD 5900X , 32gb of Gskils ram

Had a few times over last few months since recieving board where the system wont power on.
You press power switch on case and nothing .
You press power button on motherboard ...nothing ....and its lit up white ...all rgb is working ( on when powered off )
If i turn off PSU and back then power it back on ...system boots fine.
It can then be fine for say 4 weeks ...then happen out the blue again.
Was ok with old motherboard....so only things that have changed is MB and CPU.

Tried reflashing bios back to earlier version ...no different.
Had new graphics card since last time so rules that out.
Tried taking ram sticks out ...no difference.

Seems starnge how can run for weeks without issue ( but dont use it every day )

Im using an EVGA supernova 850W PSU.

Not major issue as all have to do is power off PSU and all good again ...but got to be something wrong.
Asus say sounds like something tripping PSU protection ...will have to try unpluging 24 pin and 8 pin cables next time , then plug back in to see if motherboard or psu .

Any help most appreciated.

Hi ChriZZ,
May I know how often did it occur?(for example: if you played a demanding game like Far Cry 6 with Ray Tracing and immediately shut down the PC after closing three times a day, once of them is not boot? )
Did it also occur while bios al default settings?
May I have the serial number of the motherboard via PM?
Thank you.

Hi Xairoo,
Do you mean shut down the pc or in sleep mode with bios all default settings?
How often did it occur?(for example: if you start three times a day, once of them is not boot? ) only occurred while cold restart?
Have you replaced the power supply?
May I have the serial number of the motherboard via PM?
Thank you.

Hi STARRAIN@ROG,

only after sleep/hibernate mode. Default BIOS settings.
It happened only and always if the PC was turned on an set to sleep mode for a longer time (few hours+). No problems when wake it up from sleep within 30 minutes so.
I got a new be quiet PSU and had a be quiet PSU before (pro models, from 850 to now 1000W).

Before my call with Asus I have enabled ErP. After enabling the ErP mode it worked every time.
- 9 hours sleep (wake by keyboard)
- 4 hours sleep (wake by WOL)
- 5 sleep & fast wake tests within a few seconds

Will send you the SN later if I can read it without removing the GPU or so, I am currently at work. Will also tell if it will wake up when I am back at home.

Maybe not relevant, but some people reported sleep/wake problems with the 3080/3090:
I upgraded my GPU from 2080S to a 3080 directly with the new MB. I had a GPU riser (Fractal Design) and I undervolted my 3080 because of coil whine (fixed the coil whine). Quiet coil whine at high FPS, but deep and loud sounding coil whine (not the fans, I have loosened the screws and tighten them - that again fixed the fan noise...) at about 60 FPS+. And random crashes in games and sometimes BSoD with video scheduler internal error after a few seconds directly after a fresh reboot (no game or heavy GPU app started). Sometimes the PC turned on, screen was black and GPU fans turned 100%, only turning off the PSU helped (like described above the power/reset button doesn't work). Removing the GPU riser seems to fix these crashes/problems but not the wake from sleep problems. Never had these problems with my 2080S but yeah, maybe something happened to the cable or connectors because I changed the cards a few time, but that shouldn't be happen that fast.

Hi Xairoo,
May I double confirm it occurred on 3601 and 3801?
Is [Turn on fast startup (recommended)] not ticked in additional power settings?
May I have the specific model name of the ram such as G.SKILL F4-4400C19D-16GTZSW? Is it in our qvl list?
https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-crosshair/rog-crosshair-viii-dark-hero-model/helpdesk_qvl_memo...
Thank you.

Happened to 3601 and 3801 (updated to 3801 because of this problem).

Fast startup @ Windows is currently turned off (did that before I enabled ErP). Will turn it on in Windows (have to enable hibernate `powercfg -h on` again to set this option).
Also disabled @ BIOS - should I enable it @ BIOS too?

Very very common RAM (placed on rank 4 at Switzerlands biggest online shop, rank 4 at amazon.de and rank 11 at amazon.com): Corsair Vengeance LPX 2 x 16GB, DDR4-3200, CMK32GX4M2E3200C16
4 modules in total. But it's not on the list.
No XMP (or how Asus calls this @ BIOS) profile set.

comon on for Intel. It's loot box ram and one of the worst for Ryzen period.

If it's not QVL list anywhere why are using it, was it cheap ?

Never heard that. Do you have a trusted reference for that?

https://www.corsair.com/ww/en/Categories/Products/Memory/VENGEANCE-LPX/p/CMK32GX4M2E3200C16#tab-tech...

QVL didn't list all possible working RAM kits. There are so many.

But please feel free to share a trusted reference.

There are three QVL lists for ram and heap approved on them, not sure why you can't purchase right ram in right quantity for your motherboard that passed QVL.

Good luck, but I'm not wasting any time on this request. I own enough Ryzen CPU's from gen 1 to current to be happy with my statement about LPX. You do what you want with that but my systems all work @ DOCP or higher.

at best you might get 2x16 working @ DOCP, 4x16 never going to happen unless you won loot box lottery in which case give over the version number of the LPX ram, nah scatch that it wont be any use.

Not sure why you believe I bought that RAM for this board. But okay 😉

I am running a nearly full server rack with 19" servers with a mix of EPYC's and Xeon's and ton's of RAM and many Tesla GPUs (running some AI/transcoding stuff). Never had any problems because of the RAM. Also never with XMP and DOCP. And the funny thing is: We use only LPX RAM in our workstations without any problems. But yeah, you must know 😉

A little update from my side.

It seems that your tip @Xairoo is kinda working here.
As posted above i switched the ErP to S5 (bc i only shutdown the system, never hibernate it, so S4 is not interesting on my side) and the PC started after 9 hrs off-time without any problem. I shut it down again and after 1 hr it started again like it should to.

As far as i know ErP cuts the max off-power to 1W and cuts off USB-Charging, WoL, WoK, WoM, so _maybe_ the Dark Hero somehow doesn't power down correctly, but has to with the ErP activated. Pure speculation, but maybe this helps to resolve this.
