When trying to launch Hitman 2 I get a fatal error "Direct3D: Unable to create device. Try changing resolution of color depth." What does this mean and how to I fix the problem?

Hi Heini

Here are a few things to try, I believe it's a steam game yes?

1) Go to library, right click on hitman, select properties, local files then "verify integrity of game cache"

If that doesn't help:

2) click start, this pc, local disk C, users, your name, documents, my games, hitman 2, right click on gamer profile and open with "notepad"

Look for "Color Depth 32" and change it to "Color depth 16".

If that doesn't help also change the "DrawDII RendererD3D.Dll" to DrawDII RendererOpenGL.Dll

Let me know if any of this works for you.

I reinstalled the game and it works now. Don't know what the difference is since I set all games up the same way each time. I play from CD and I'm off to try Hitman Contracts now.

Contracts would be Hitman 3. I got it loaded and it plays awful, it;s OK except when trying to run it's in slow motion.

It could be how you have the game settings, try backing off the antialiasing and see if it's any better.

I believe it a combination of Win10, nVidia & DX12, some older games are having problems. Tomorrow I'll load Blood Money (Hitman 4) and see how it goes but it'll take all weekend to play through it if it loads OK. After that is Absolution (Hitman 5) and by the time I get through it Hitman 6 should be releasing.

You know just tonight my pc is acting up too, far cry 4 is playing very stuttery and cpu usage is at 50% when it should be around 15%-20%. I'm reinstalling it right now if it doesn't get any better I'm going to reinstall windows and cross my fingers that fixes it.

I'm not sure what's going on it was fine yesterday, I haven't installed any programs or hardware so it's got me stumped at the moment.

I might try blackvipers stuff to turn off so many of the useless stuff we're force fed.

Well I figured out what was causing the BAD performance I already told you in a PM but I'll tell you again here. Yesterday I installed the realbench HWBOT edition and to upload your score it says enable HPET. So I did and didn't think anything of it, later on I went to play a game and it was extremely stuttery.

I realized what it was while I was reinstalling windows and if I would have thought of it beforehand I could have saved myself the hassle. So just a little warning DO NOT enable HPET for playing games.
