What clock speeds for the RAM sticks on Maximus IV Extreme P67, other than 1600MHz?

The manual state that the mainboard uses 1600MHz ram sticks, which can be overclocked, however I am wondering if I have to only use 1600MHz ram, or if I can buy ram sticks with a higher clock frequency.

I already have 2x8 GB 1600MHz ram, but want to consider buying 4x8 GB ram with higher clock speeds if possible.

The only thing that I can see, which might indicate that one could use ram sticks with a higher clock speed is off Asus website:

"Due to CPU behavior, DDR3 2200/2000/1800 MHz memory module will run at DDR3 2133/1866/1600 MHz frequency as default."
Unfortunately, this piece of information is next to pointless, because it doesn't really explain why they wrote that.

Below is what is writted on Assus website with regard to RAM:
4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333 Hz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
* According to Intel® SPEC, the Max. 32GB memory capacity can be supported with DIMMs of 8GB (or above). ASUS will update QVL once the DIMMs are available on the market.
* Refer to www.asus.com or user manual for the Memory QVL (Qualified Vendors Lists).
* Due to CPU behavior, DDR3 2200/2000/1800 MHz memory module will run at DDR3 2133/1866/1600 MHz frequency as default.

If nothing else, I am tempted to buy the "Crucial Ballistix Tactical LP 32GB", which seem to be dual voltage ram, which can be oc'ed to 2200MHz from what I am reading.

Hello Deconman

You'd probably have no difficulty running 16GB at 2200Mhz but 32GB will put more strain on the cpu's imc.

What cpu will you be using?

I have an i7 2700k cpu running at 4.6GHz (hyper-threading disabled for now).

Will probably re-enable hyper-threading when I sigh upgrade to windows 10 and get a new SSD and do another OS install.
