Video Driver (OLD OR NEW)

Hi Everyone,

About my pc (See Signature - updated today)

I have this GTX 680. And I know it's important to stay up-to-date with drivers to keep up with physx, opengl and such.

The problem is that most of my games get huge FPS drops when on the newer drivers.
I notice when I'm using the 310.90 Driver (just after my card in the changelog) I get every game capped and locked 60 fps. Everything runs super smooth as it should.

Why would I have so much spikes on the newer drivers? Sure I want to keep up-to-date but I really notice that it's more stable with olders drivers. What would this add to my work in Autodesk 3D Studio Max, Photoshop & Games. Is it worth losing so many frames? (it goes to like 20-30 fps on this beast) putting Physx on Low helps but doesn't solve it on the newer drivers.

Suggestions? I'm just updating the Physx driver. I thought maybe I could install OpenGL driver seperately but no.

Hello piotrtekien,

Have you tried the 340.52 driver? I'm using it with my 680's and seems to be a good driver. If you are gaming higher than 1080p one gtx 680 is going to struggle to keep 60 FPS with the newer games. If youre coming from the 310.xx drivers you should notice a nice performance boost.

When installing the new driver, after the license agreement click custom/advanced install, I just install the graphics driver and PhysX driver and uncheck everything else. Also check the box that says perform a clean installation.

If you had a better cpu cooler you could overclock your cpu and that would give you a nice performance boost as well.

Thank you for your response.

"A better CPU cooler"

This one is the top of it's line on air coolers. it's at the same performance as a water cooler.
My cpu is overclocked to 4.4GHz very stable.

I have a 1080p screen and generally run all games maxed out on ultra.
Borderlands 2 seems to be having problems with the newer drivers.

I know I can do a clean installation. I even used the Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode after removing the drivers to have a clean 340.52

All did not work. The drivers are just not stable enough. Maybe it's my specific GTX 680 model
I have a Gainward GeForce Nvidia Phantom GTX 680 4GB Edition

Ok, that is a nice overclock for your cpu cooler. You have one of the best psu's money can buy. Have you ever thought about adding a second gtx 680 for sli? Here are some benchmarks for Borderlands 2. Are you getting about the same performance? With PhysX set to high it does drop into the 30's FPS.

Hey, I I fixed it.

- Uninstalled 310.90, rebooted
- Uninstalled other Nvidia components, rebooted
- rebooted into safe mode
- ran Display Driver Uninstallers (removing extra nvidia stuff)
- Booted into windows, installed 340.52
- Tried Playing Borderlands 2. Physx on Low. It's the same as the 310.90 driver now. Physx just ****ed it up.

I was probably confused back then.

Also my video card was 550 euro. It's a special edition and I'm not gonna find this card so easily if I want SLI.

Thank you for the compliment and help anyway. Stupid Physx haha

You're welcome,

Any gtx 680 4 GB card will work with your Gainward gtx 680 for sli.

I read something that it has to be the same MHz because mine is mildly overclocked by the makers.

Not true, as long as your cards are the same model (gtx 680) and have the same amount of Vram (4GB) you can run sli. They don't have to be the same manufacturer or the same clock speed.

Ok thank you, will consider it. I'm a student. 550 euro doesn't grow on tree's hahahah
I want to get my i7 3770k to 4.7GHz too though. Can I add you on skype/steam?? I would like to talk for a bit.

Sorry, I don't use Skype and I don't have steam installed. if you have any questions please ask, that's what the forum is for. What I would suggest you do is install real temp 3.70,open it and play the most demanding game you have for 10 - 15 minutes and report the maximum cpu temperature real temp is showing. The temps will determine if you can push for a higher cpu clock speed.
