Very Weak Wifi Connection

Hello everyone,

I have a Asus ROG G750 JM and use it for demanding Games like Battlefield and Call of Duty. It was working fine for the first 3 weeks but the last few days I don't know what went wrong. I couldn't connect to my wifi so thinking nothing of it I connected directly through Ethernet cable and it worked fine. At work the same problem occurred so I did a basic troubleshoot and would literally have to be 5 feet from the modem to connect and it was 2 bars strong. I've tried everything from restoring the computer to factory settings, updated drivers, rolled back drivers, set power management to maximum performance, and all the little tricks I can think of and to no avail. I would say the antenna was disconnected, but if it was I wouldn't get any service so that's not the problem. Is there anything anyone can think of that's causing my very weak wifi connectivity cause I really don't want to go through the whole return process. I'm currently waiting for Tech support to email me back but in the meantime was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences with these laptops? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello 🙂 Are you using a 2.4 GHz or a 5 GHz connection? I know the 5 GHz connection is usually weaker in terms of distance for your Wifi connection. I usually use my 5GHz connection for games because I'm the only one on that connection. Also, certain things in your house can cause your wifi connection to become very weak and unstable. These things include CDs and DVDs laying around, a microwave, a wireless home phone as well. Did you buy and place anything new in your house maybe? It could possibly be your wireless card is biting the dust, have you tried a new wireless card or adapter recently? You could buy the same one you have now and see if it really is the adapter you have now, or try a different adapter just to make sure if you have the funds. the drivers you rolled back, were they the default drivers? Or just the ones before the newest driver update? I'm new to the forums to, but networking is my specialty 🙂

The problem isn't just at my house, it's at work and public places too. I thought this computer comes with a decent network card. It's gotten better after updating and cleaning up the computer. I just thought theres some kind of setting I messed with. I might just switch it out at best buy for a brand new one. Is there a software out there that goes through my settings for maximum performance?

I know it doesn't help the question ur asking but WiFi is awful for gaming, everything can interfere with a WiFi connection and how many ppl are on it matters as well

Wireless N has less interface only cause not everything runs on that frequency

Wired is best for gaming and even then you'll notice lag on certain games when someone else connection sucks

The way most FPS that I've played at least work is ppl with good connections balance the ppl with awful ones lol

Back when Xbox live was what I played on my connection was so nice me joining laggy games would cause it to stop lagging, if me joining didn't fix it the person either had worthless internet or they were from like Brazil

To answer your other question no I don't believe you can change things to make WiFi weaker, most WiFi devices don't allow you to adjust the antenna power which is how you would boost the boost or shorten it

I've played MMO 's countless hours running wireless with my desktop and I never lag. Wireless has gotten so good over the past years that being wireless and wired makes little to no difference. Even less of a difference using the right channel and frequency. For gaming, wired and wireless my ping sits around 60 or 70 ms depending on the server location and the ping from wireless to wired makes no noticeable difference. At OP, chances are your wireless card could just be shot. Try using an external USB wireless adapter if you can and see if that makes a difference in your connection. If you can, just try it out and return the adapter for a refund wherever you buy it if you can't really afford one to keep right now, to at least see if your internal adapter is the culprit.

If you were directing that to me I have no internet issue, as I said tho wireless just isn't as good it still catches interference, on my PC my ping time more like 1ms or 0ms when wired

Wireless its at about 10ms but ping time wasent really what I was focused on when I said WiFi isn't as good for gaming
