System Cooling Advice (i7-7700K, Z270-A)

Hey folks!

I wanted to see if I could get some help with cooling my rig. This was my first custom build, and I got some help from a buddy of mine. The only problem that I am having so far is that it seems like my CPU is running hot. I've tried quite a bit of work already, and I'm not having much success.

Idle temp: ~38-45c
Gaming temp: 60-75c

Rig Info:

  • ASUS Prime Z270-A
  • Cooler Master Haf X
  • Intel Kaby Lake i7-7700K
  • Corsair H100i v2 (upgraded radiator fans)
  • ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1070 O8G

Things I've tried:

  • Installed new case fans with higher CFM
  • Removed Corsair stock thermal paste, replaced with Arctic Silver 5
  • Set a custom fan curve in Corsair Link, set AIO pump to full power
  • Turned case fans to 100% with fan controller (NZXT Sentry 3)
  • Re-adjusted case fans to use push-pull (front, side, rear intake; top x2 exhaust plus CPU radiator on top pushing out)

I also have reduced the overclocking on the CPU. I reset the settings in BIOS to optimized defaults, then set XMP and fixed my DRAM timings/frequencies. Voltage is set to auto, averaging 1-1.4 vcore.

Attaching photos of my rig and DIP5 settings.

I would be happy to provide any additional information, and I really appreciate your help!

Forgot to include my DIP5 settings.

Hi AndyBlak

I'd try going for the lowest vcore in manual mode then switch to adaptive mode, this will reduce cpu speed and voltage at idle which will give you lower idle temps. The i7-7700k is notorious for running hot because of the cheap thermal paste Intel uses, your temps don't look out of the ordinary and aren't in the danger zone.

The best thing to do to get temps lower is delid the i7-7700k, this reduced temps 15c for me.

This was the first time I delidded a cpu and with the Rockit 88 tool it's easy, if you're interested in delidding I show my results starting on page 9, 6th post.

^what Nate said.

7700k is a hot chip due to TIM material intel used. Your temps aren't bad at all. I see many 7700k hitting 80-95C loaded. You are fine where you are. That said, if you want lower temps, de-lid your CPU. Like Nate, I dropped almost 20c doing mine. I also used the Rockit 88 tool and it was a breeze. That said, caution should be used before undertaking as it does void your warranty.

Thanks for the replies dudes! I have heard about de-lidding and I've seen a few folks doing that. I am going to consider that option. I am glad to hear that my temps are normal though. That's all that really matters in the long run! Thanks again.

I wanted to post a quick update on this thread, because I found the source of the problem. It's a real noob mistake, to be honest. I was using a guide on overclocking, when I discovered that my AIO pump was not configured in Q-Fan in BIOS. After configuring it and running Q-Fan's Optimize, my system is staying in the mid 30's when idle!

You could place your radiator in front of your case and use the fan as intake. This will lower your temp. Question is how much can be 3 to 5 degree as well. You will heat up the rest in your case. But none of your hardware will care much about that mostly unless if you have blowerfan style GPU. But you have that.

Yes I would recommand a delid! I dropped 15C on my 6600k... wich awas lol not really running hot. But I just did it beacuse I could...
