Hi there, long time stalker, first time poster. How much of a performance boost does adding an ssd as the main drive really give you?? It is the only item I did not upgrade in my new build, and am now wondering if I should have. Thanks in advance.

Dave

Welcome to the ROG Forum!

Actually adding an SSD for your OS gives the most performance increase you can feel in everyday use... more then OC'ing the CPU, RAM and GPU...

Yes, the difference is very noticeable and as Zka17 said it's the upgrade that will give the greatest real world performance increase.

It improves everyday usage, you can open long pdf files quicker for instance. Boot times are also quicker. But if we're talking about gaming there isn't much increase in terms of performance. But it will decrease the loading times of the game files/textures that you put into the ssd. So it can bump minimum fps ever so slightly that way.

Everyone yells samsung or intel, but kingston has it goin on too. It is not the absolute best maybe, but it is damn good for the $. Here is some reading material, this also has a full list of the different SSDs and which are good and which are not, as well as allot of optimization info. I will recomend whatever you buy, buy a 240Gb. You can have your OS, your applications, 2-3 of your favorite games and still have 40% free space, which is good for best performance. If you cannot afford, don't go less than a 128Gb.
I can also recommend my choice : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-171-568&IsVirtualParent=1
