Settled on 6700K overlock, opinions needed.

I created a first thread here, but I've since changed the overclock and testing.

Build

  • Motherboard: Asus Z170 Maximum VIII Hero
  • CPU: Intel i7 6700K
  • RAM: 2x8GB Kingston Fury DDR4 2667 @ 15-17-17-35
  • CPU Cooling: Corsair H110i GT Cooler
  • GPU: MSI Twin Frozr GTX 970
  • HDD: 1* Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD
  • HDD: 1* OCZ ARC100 480GB SSD
  • HDD: 4* WD RED 4TB 64MB cache, 5400RPM
  • HDD: 1* Seagate 3TB 32MB cache, 7200RPM
  • Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D
  • PSU: Corsair RM850X
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro x64

Overclocking

  • CPU: Intel i7 6700K | 4.7GHz @ ~1.376v MAX
  • RAM: Kingston Fury DDR4 2667 15-17-17-35 | 2800 15-17-17-35 @ 1.2v (same timings)
  • GPU: MSI Twin Frozr GTX 970 | 1501MHz @+50mV

Tests Run and results

  • Cinebench R15 | 1051
  • Realbench | 8hr Stresstest with up to 8GB RAM used - PASSED
  • IntelBurnTest | 50 runs on standard - PASSED
  • x264 FHD Benchmark (AVX used)| 35.08 FPS - PASSED
  • LinX | 20 runs - PASSED
  • 1080p x264 encode using custom .avs script, generally very 'heavy' x264 options used (AVX used)| 7.31 FPS over 12 hours - PASSED

Note
ASUS, please fix Sonic Studio II. It causes mouse lag during 100% CPU stresstests. I checked every other thing I could think of - closing Sonic Studio II resolved this issue.

46 hours of HWiNFO data
This was left running whilst all the above tests were performed.
EDIT: I've just noticed that HWiNFO reports the max for the bus as 350 or so - surely that can't be correct?

BIOS settings

  • C States | Only C1E enabled
  • CPU Voltage | Adaptive with 1.350 set on 'Additional Turbo etc.'
  • RAM Voltage | Fixed @ 1.200v
  • LLC | Level 5
  • Nearly everything else important left on Auto/defaults

Opinions very much welcomed!

Cheers,

Piers

The mouse lag your getting when your stress testing could mean that your OC is not completely stable.

It only happens when Sonic Suite II is enabled - that's it. I've even tried running LinX, RealBench, CineBench, and IBT all at the same time - no mouse lag when Sonic Suite II is closed, but lag when it's enabled.

So, technically, you could be correct - but surely one would expect to see the lag regardless of whether or not one application is open.

I should add: I found other reports on forums reporting the same issue with different hardware.
