Rampage IV Extreme. Problems from purchase till now

Setup:
CPU: i7 3930k
MOBO: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
XMP 2 Kits : Kingston Hyper X 16GB Mem kit 1866 DDR 3 (32 GB Total 8 DIMM)
PSU: CM 1200 Gold Silent Pro 80+
GPU: ASUS HD 7970 DCU 2 Top
CPU Cooler: CM 412Slim
SS Corsair Force GT3
HD WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6
Chassis: CM Cosmos 2 x8 Case Fans (No Rads)

With all arrogance I've ignored the many problems I've seen on the net regarding the ASUS Rampage IV Extreme and on a different issue ~ the problems with SB and 8 DIMMs.

What started off from a 00 Debug turned into a bootable system after taking the pieces apart and putting em back with a much neater cable management.

So comes happiness. Being able to download and install updates, drivers, new bios versions (which seriously all previous bios stated improved stability.. coming from asus it's really a surprise or maybe it's my lack of skill and knowledge)

Stability went from unbootable (00 debug code) to bootable and constant freezes every 5-10 minutes. (AA which is supposed to be normal). Tweaked ram voltage to 1.6 for both ab and cd and stability went up to 3 hours however not so whilst gaming.

Earlier today before I slept, I resetted the entire bios again including jumpers, cmos clear etc etc and start fresh. Going into EZ mode set to high performance back to advanced for ram voltage to 1.6 and the XMP profile as well.

Stability was a nice surprise. I woke up 12 hours later and it was still running with no freezes and my torrents were all done with (an easy way i guess to see if there's any system hiccups)

With that I booted up Bullet Storm and after 20 minutes of gameplay much like every single run before the 12 hours clean uptime it freezes. (Debug still AA?)

So my arrogance had a hefty price tag on it and I don't know what else I can do. Would like it if anyone could help me out with this as I'm on the edge wondering what's wrong and I totally have no idea what to do next (not an overclocking enthusiast or a bios surfer, yeah i'm pretty much a plug and play guy >.<)

+ : Bulletstorm used to run like a charm (crysis as well) on my Q9550 HD 7970 4GB Ram set up but on this rig, after turning everything to max, the menu screens becomes very choppy.

+ : All parts were bought brand new factory sealed

+ : Need urgent help as we are trying to finalize this prototype build for ODM. (ASUS ROG you know what this means)

+ : If i sounded like an A** i do apologize sincerely but that's just how i talk and if i offended anyone I'm sorry.

LOL do not worry my friend. I am sure we would all struggle to speak or write a post in your home language. You from Malaysia right?

Lets be upfront here, that motherboard is simply one of the best pieces of kit you will ever get to play with. It is the the F1 of motherboards. Now just like a F1 car, it needs lots of understanding to make it fly.

It is a good thing that you have done in accepting that you need help, that is the first step. The next step is to read as many of the very good guides that are sticky in the Rampage sub-forum. Take your time and work through them. Raja has explained each and every BIOS option. And there are other guides that will allow you to overclock your system in different ways.

Myself I do not like the pre-sets that are found on the EZ mode. They are a bit to clunky for me.

Here is what we are going to do, you are going to read those guides, and then when you are done you will clear CMOS again and start from scratch. This time you use the AI tuner and explore with confidence the full power of this awesome motherboard. The whole ROG forum will be here to help or answer any questions that might crop up. I doubt that there will be many as the guides are very good.

But there is one tip I will give you. And that is with the set up you have, you really need to keep a sharp eye on your systems temperatures. especially when you are over clocking.

A really good overclock for that board and easily achievable is 4.4GHz. Simple select the XMP profile for your ram and then change the multiplier for all cores to 44. You can leave the voltages alone for now and your system should be stable. But read the guides and get to know your system. You are certainly not arrogant, if you were you would not have asked for help.

Regards and welcome to the forum.

Do exactly what HiVizMan said first. 4.4GHz is the sweet spot on my 3930k Rampage IV Extreme setup. To me it sounds like its the memory that is causing the bsod's. which is truly a travesty because you only running at 1866MHz which has to make it the Kingston Memory modules not the RIVE. and if it ends up not being the Memory being bad its that the memory needs some tuning in the bios. i would go into Digi Power+ and change the DRAM ab/cd Power Phase Control to optimized, set the AB/CD Current Capabilities to 120%,, and turn DRAM AB?CD Voltage Frequncy to manual then 400. Hope you get things figures out

have tried out hiviz's suggestion early this morning. managed to get my 12 hours worth of idle stability back up though prime blend didn't give me much to work with.

will try out your suggestion as well 🙂 been reading the whole day on posts regarding the mobo and mems.

Thanks guys. will update soon

Freezing seems to have stopped after trying out the solution given by acid man and it's running smoothly at 4.4 @ 1.32

Will start memtest and prime and update.

Thank again 🙂

A few more tests and this spec is good to go for an upcoming convention and ODM plans. Will send you a pm Viz 🙂
