Overclocking my Asus G74SX ROG laptop, I am noobish please help :)

Now until now I have never really worried about overclocking my Asus G74SX because to be honest I haven't really needed to performance wise, everything I have bought up till now has run in 1920X1080 with everything on MAX or at least High settings (Crysis 2) ! Even with games like Skyrim it auto set itself to ULTRA and I would get between 45-80 fps ingame which offline is fine for me game wise!

Then I went out and bought FarCry3 ..... things have changed, I know I am not alone and there are hundreds of 'OMG my SLI'd GTX580 rig won't run FC3 above 40fps the game suxorz' threads on the Ubisoft official forums, however I have had to put all the settings down so much I am after some more beef to help! For example, I had to turn DX11 off and run DX9, turn Shadows, PostFX, Geometry down to LOW just to get the game playable with a stable enough 30fps! This will not do, until the game becomes better optmized with patches, OR Nvidia decide to support their Mobility cards (GTX560M 3GB) instead of just the 600 range, I would like a bit of a boost for the more demanding games!

My question to you guys is, is it possible to overclock my Asus G74SX since it is a laptop? If so, is it possible to let some program do it for me instead of me having to tinker with each setting to find out my laptop won't boot? !! I am only after a low overclock, I can't really afford a new laptop atm, this one was over 2k when I bought it and the new G75 is even more! How safe is it to do this and what are the risks? I have a little overclocking experience with Desktops but never with laptops so any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂 Also, If anyone has achieved a real world overclock (not just bragging rights but what they use every day) with systems like mine and have it stable over time can you please let me know, and what program you used?

Thanks 🙂

160 odd views and not one reply... thanks for helping a fellow gamer out 😞 Seriously, don't know why I bother posting in the ROG forums sometimes, unless you are a PC Nerd that knows everything about every component in a PC Box, no-one wants to help!

Hey Thorn2011:)

Sorry bud I saw this yesterday but since I know nothing about laptops I couldn't venture much help.

One thing you could do is post in the specific laptop section.....someone will be able to help you there....maybe a mod can move your thread?

Having said that you be careful OCing your machine...laptops don't have the sort of cooling that allows for much in the way of higher clocks...

Thanks, that section doesn't get too much traffic I thaught I would run into more serious crowd here 🙂

The cooling in the Asus G74SX is pretty good, reading through some threads in the ROG forums I have used Nvidiainspector and done a very low overclock of 150mhz on GPU and Memory, temps only rose 4-5 degrees and haven't even hit 60 degree's Celsius even after playing demanding games like FC3! Saying that I pushed it to 900/1550 and FC3 hard locked, forcing me to hold down the power button to power off, I guess this was too far for my GTX560M?

Thanks again 🙂

Using TrottleStop for CPU and MSI Afterburner for GPU, I have managed to get CPU stable at 2.8 (Max Multiplier) and GPU stable at 850/1300. I am certain it can go further, but I haven't even tried.

I could be wrong but arn't Sandy Bridge CPU's locked? If not I can definately push it further than Intel TurboBoost is! Thanks I will try MSI Afterburner ! So far using Nvidiainspector I have pushed the GPU to 850/1400/1700 and that seems stable, no lock ups and the heat well, I have barely noticed much difference, the highest I have seen it after playing a game like FC3 is 59 degrees Celsius.. its amazing how good the cooling is in this laptop. In terms of FPS increased, around 5-10 up to 15 in some areas, not bad for a low overclock?
