Overclocking for the first time, running into problems :(

Hi everyone,

I just finished building the following box the other day:

- Intel i7-6900k (3.2GHz trying to OC to 4GHz but would like to go to 4.2GHz)
- Asus Rampage 10 Edition 10 (Lastest BIOS flash)
- Corsair DOMINATOR Platinum Series 64 GB DDR4 3200 C16
- Corsair Hydro Series H115i
- Corsair HXi Series, HX1000i
- Samsung 950 Pro (512GB - OS + Apps)
- Samsung 850 Pro X2 (1TB - Raid 1 - Work Files)
- Nvidia Titan X-Pascal

I ran the system at it's default settings and everything seemed fine, I decided to do some research on overclocking using recent videos on youtube to tweak my system. Now what's odd is when I changed the CPU core speed to 4GHz and saved my settings in the BIOS is still showed as 3.2GHz (right hand side of the attached BIOS image) and using CPU-Z (in attached image in the BLUE box) it shows little under 3.2GHz.

When I log into windows everything seems fine, no system lag. A few minuets later the system lags and I get the following from windows: http://new.tinygrab.com/5ff8c90b9c29d14507095e89f9f1b2222ce78cc240.png

BIOS + CPU-Z screenshot: http://new.tinygrab.com/5ff8c90b9c5f2fa4c2fab8bf49c10ed6e464151c8b.jpg

** UPDATE: I changed the core speed to 4.2GHz and took a screenshot of HWiNFO64 + CPU-z: http://new.tinygrab.com/5ff8c90b9ce503bc3e6b76ce4098f002aff557bc7a.png system still has windows lag issue when idel

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for any help/ guidance to this overclock noob.

All right

I'm sorry you're having such problems, you're narrowing it down though with two ram kits and a new motherboard, let's hope you get good results this time.

Yes give it a try with minimal components, if it still doesn't pass let's maybe try a different memory tester.

Good luck I got my fingers crossed, give us an update once you run the test.

Ok so, It's not my memory (tried two different brands), it's not my Mobo (bought a second one to trouble shoot), I unhooked all SSDs from the mobo and I even swapped out GPUs to see if maybe that was the issue. Is it safe to say its the CPU?

It's not passing, still locks at the 16% and it's also not the CPU: 59224

So I now know I know nothing, I really thought I finally narrowed it down to the CPU... Is Memtest86 V7.1 buggy or something? I've tested everything... I'm so at a loss. Everything about this box is default just wish I knew what the issue is.

Here is my latest testing: 59225

System hasn't froze or crashed, going to keep this test going for an hour, would it be ok to run it over night?

Had exact same problem with memtest86. It's some kind of UEFI/multiprocessor issue.
I got past the problem when I selected CPU mode single and ran with CPU 0.

The issue occurs when running in parallel mode (not sure bout robin or the other mode).

Is that option in Memtest86 and if so where?

That is option in memtest86. It's under the CPU selection in memtest settings.
There you see single (and u need to select what cpu to use 0,1, 2, 3....), parallel, round robin etc

@SgtHighway - You sir... you hit the nail on the head! I would of never thought that having more than one CPU going would case a memtest to freeze! Did you read this solution else where or were you just messing around inside memtest and just tried that option? Ugh I feel like such a fool going through all of this running around, late nights, early mornings and lack of sleep just for something as simple as running a single core to test.... sigh... I can't thank you enough for solving that issue.

After running memtest86 for 2 hrs with only one core it seemed the mem was good to go. I tried to run Memtest86+ but I ran into too many issues with trying that program. I did the USB option, tried to format/install using the Mt86+ installer and it kept telling me it wouldn't be bootable (tried to format/install a few more times). After a few hours of reading forums I was able to move forward, changed the boot order to USB. At boot-up it would load a blank screen then automatically go back into the BIOS settings. Gave up and moved on.

Ran windows memory diagnostic first as standard and it passed and I threw 14 hrs at Extended but it seem never to move from 21% so I figured 64GB takes days to check or somethings up. Also keep in mind now that things seem stable I will be updating the BIOS and starting to do some OC testing so I'll post numbers/ progress.

I'll test another block of 64GB to see what's up. I'll try to grab some sticks today and report back.

@Nate152 - I'll try those settings, I might do some more digging and see what other timings other users are using for that mem type. Thank you for your time 🙂
