OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 240GB PCIe SandForce SF-2281 Solid State Disk Flash Drive

Hi,

I am building a new system and wonder if anyone here has bench marked one of these drives in the real world.

They have gone down considerably and I wonder if it is worth the extra $200 compared to a top end SATA SSD?

I build a new system about every 5 years and my old Commando board is still going strong.

I have about half of the parts and am holding off to see if a few of the major parts will go down around Christmas.

Also, does it matter what PCI-E slot to use on Rampage IV Extreme for this type of drive.

This is what the system will be when completed:

Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Edition Case
Rampage IV Extreme E-ATX LGA2011 X79 Motherboard
Intel Core i7 3930K 6 Core 12MB 3.2GHZ LGA2011 Processor
ZIGMATEK Dark Knight II SD1283 Night Hawk Edition CPU Cooler
PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk III 1200W ATX Modular Power Supply 80PLUS Platinum
XFX Radeon HD 7970 Double D 925MHZ 3GB Video Card
Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional Sound Card
G.SKILL F3-2400C10Q-32GTX Trident X 32GB 4X8GB DDR3-2400 CL10 1.65V Quad Channel Memory Kit
OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 240GB PCIe SandForce SF-2281 Solid State Disk Flash Drive
2nd HD=Seagate Momentus XT (ST750LX003) 750GB 7200RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" Solid State Hybrid Drive
LiteOn IHAS424-98 24x DVD Writer, LightScribe, Internal SATA
Windows 8 Pro 64Bit

I bought the XFX Graphix card now because I like their cards and it was on sale for $100 less than anywhere else, so I doubt if it will go down more during the holidays. Also included was a neat t-shirt and product code download for Sleeping Dogs, Far Cry3 and Hitman Absolution.

I now have everything else except the CPU, Ram and Primary Hard Drive, hoping at least one of those will go down in the next month and a half (if I can wait that long).
The case has two 200mm fans and one 140 with room for three more, so I am not going for water cooling unless I decide to Crossfire another 3GB card.

I see the Intel i7 3970's are out and not much more than the 3960s at $1100. I expect the the 3960's will go down soon and may go for that unless there is a good drop in the 3930's because I see OCers have been able to get the 3930s stable at 4.5GHZ.
Any comments would be appreciated.
One thing though: Please don't tell me to get a better heatsink cooler. I hate the looks of those monsters. IMO, they ruin the look of the board and might bend it when moved.Water cooler fans are loud, at least the ones I have seen running.
Besides, the Stealth should look great with the Rampage IV and White/Black case and power supply.

Think that question about the Revo drives would be better asked over at the OCZ forum to be honest.

I do not like them nor will I have them in any of the builds I do. Have had too many issues and problem with builds in t he past. The top end SSD's are the way to go in my view. But like I have indicated past experiences may have coloured my views.
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

The only experience(s) I have with the OCZ Revodrives are with the model you are asking about - the RevoDrive3x2 240GB ...

I have 3 of them as the main boot drive in 3 rigs (Win7x64 Sig, Win7x32 WS, '08R2 Server), & a 4th RD3x2 240Gb for a Win7x64 RIVE build.
... have had zero issues / zero problems with any of my RD3x2 240GB drives - just make sure the PCIE slot is a "true" x4 or better slot ... 😄

... best of luck with your RIVE build ...

Look at closed loop water cooling 😄 Just get some other fans with low db and high Static Pressure, should be some out there.

I have a 120gb revo. No issues. It benches as OCZ says they will but if you are looking for a fast boot drive, the revo is not great for that. Better than a hdd but slower than a ssd boot times

Boot times are slower with the Revo drives compared to regular SSDs because of ROM initialization during Post. The bigger issue with your proposed configuration is system backups. Not all backup utilities work with the Revo and there are very few that properly support the x79 platform. Using the Revo with the x79 board really limits the choice of backup utilities. If you go this route I would suggest Casper for data backup. It will work fine with the Revo on the x79 platform but will require a dedicated drive for the backup.

Thanks for all the replies.

I guess I will go with two SATA SSDs. Anyone using two or more in RAID (0)?

Problems with any mfgs or models?

From reviews the Corsair Neutron Series seems to be tops.

Any comments are appreciated.

Phil:)

Only thing is raid 0 can fail and you loose the lot. Fast but not great for crucial data. You would still need to back up on a seperate drive

I use 2x120gb OCZ 4 in raid 0 for games only. No problems so far but only 1 month use. Slightly slower benchmarks than the revo
