newbie and rampage iv confusion

hello all !
ill start by saying I haven't overclocked a pc in years like years years back when I did it was light gumping up the Mhz and compensating with a little more voltage and bigger coolers .
thats where my experience ends !

just built my new rig as follows
rampage iv black edition
i7 4820k 3.7Ghz (2011)
16Gig g.skill 2400Mhz trident X
corsair H100i
sapphire r9 280x duel

I would like to run a mild pre set OC that's stable and safe I have found the following in the bios
. OC for air cooled pc
.OC for watercooled pc

I select the air cooled and my boot up is not stable . I have not been brave enough to try watercooled
also my ram is running at 1333 this seems a little low ?

am I looking at the wrong presets ? can anyone point me out in the right direction ?
or any one in Hampshire uk want to get hands on and help me set this up ? some beers in it !

apologies if this is in the wrong section !

Welcome to the ROG Supermotolew

Those preset OC dont all ways give you the best setup as all hardware is different. Start here and report back with any questions you may have.

Hi supermotolew and Welcome to ROG.

Get to know your Bios, supermotolew and only make changes to settings for frequency and voltage in Bios.

Your Bios is extremely comprehensive and a little daunting at first. Don't be scared to try things out!!

For your DIMMs you can select the XMP profile in the AI overclock tuner section.

Try the OC profile for water cooled, or manually configure your settings in Extreme OC menu.

Save profiles as you go to a USB, so if anything goes wrong you can upload a previously saved profile.

There are plenty of willing helpers here, should you have specific problems, Just Ask.
Do a small stress test after changes in Bios and always monitor your Temps with CoreTemp and its grapher plugin and monitor with 1 monitor at a time to avoid erroneous readouts.

Thanks guys I think thats the problem the bios is huge and daunting. Im studying the manual today and ill try a pre set are the named presets and the cpu level ups the same thing ?

Not always the same, Presets are selected by ASUS techos for known configurations, and may not suit your setup. CPU level ups are used to raise your CPU frequency in conjunction with your DIMMs, and that don't always work either.

Once you have finished studying your Bios you will see that it is best to OC with static settings, save a profile and test, raising values in small amounts at a time.

righty I've printed off the guides to take home with me im planning to bump up the multiplyer and to try the xmp settings to up my memory speeds im hoping not to change voltages just yet I would be happy with a reliable oc of 4.5 and ram to 1600 at least ? any thoughts on ram clocks ? I have 2x8gigs of 2400mhz a little misleading here because my pc shop said they will run at 2400 with no changes system apart from setting at 2400 if I knew I could only squeeze 1333 or 1600 I could have brought much cheaper memory ??? or am I getting confused

ill try 44x and stock voltages and apply xmp

Yea mate, your a little confused atm, You will be able to set your DIMMs at the speed you want, Trust me.
The Bios always sets to a safe parameter at default. You can even go higher than stock if you want to.

This guide will assist and most is relevant: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?38018-Guide-Easy-Overclocking-with-Ivy-Bridge-E-%96-The-Lis...

Good Luck and let us know how you go.

yep I got that pdf version printed out infront of me but woosh ! don't laugh but ... I thought 44x was my recommended multiplier for around oc 4.5 Ghz
is there more then 1 multiplier ? 1 for cpu and one for memory ? im well lost now !

I have printed and read both of Raja@ asus pdf guides Im just being dense .

As you know not all CPUs of the same spec will clock at a higher frequencies, and basically, you are establishing the WALL so to speak, of just how high you can go and maintain stability. It involves small increments of the multiplier and adjusting voltages to maintain the stability under stress, Use ROG RealBench for benchmark and it has a stress tester. And as I said monitor your temps.

Pay special attention to the Final List!!
