New to Overclocking

I'm new to overclocking, and have been doing a lot of research before I attempt it. In my new build, I have a SSD boot drive and 2, 1 TB HDD's in RAID 0 (setting up a NAS a little later when I can afford it).

I have a i7-4970k, MFVII, and G.SKILL TRIDENT X @ 2400. If I try to OC this, when it reaches it limit and won't boot, do I have to hit my CMOS button, or can I reboot into the UEFI? I'm afraid if I reset the CMOS, I lose the RAID because I'm using the RAID controller on the MFVII. I don't want to have to rebuild that RAID again.

I just want to know for sure before I attempt anything.

looks to me like your ready to go, nice rig also..

If your overclock fails it will cause a reboot. Just go back in the BIOS and change your settings as needed (i.e. increase voltage, lower clock, etc.). You won't have to clear CMOS. Then try again. Also, may I ask why you're running your storage drive in RAID 0? If set up properly, meaning running your OS, programs, and games from the SSD then I'm guessing your 1TB drives are for storage (pics, music, files). Just my 2 cents, but I set my storage drive up in RAID 1 for data backup reasons. There is not much advantage in setting up in RAID 0 and you increase your chances of hard drive failure by adding the other drive. Just something to think about. Also, check out these guides for overclocking, they may help.

My SSD is 128 GB and it's a boot drive only, OS and OS apps (Windows 8.1 Pro) are the only things installed. Moved the Program Files and User Profiles over to the RAID.

Didn't want to use RAID 1 because it's mirrored, if I accidentily delete a file, it's deleted from both drives, if a file gets corrupted, it's corrupted on both, really bad power surge, both drives can get fried, same with a virus. Anything bad that will happen on one, will happen on both, so I don't really view it as a true back up. That's why I'm going to get a NAS the same size as the RAID, anything happens to my RAID, I have the backup, and can rebuild the RAID from the backup, especially when I want to replace dying drives, or switch from HDD's to SSD's, (when the prices come down a little more). With the OS being the only thing on the SSD, if that get corrupted, it would be easy to format / reinstall and not lose any info.

Thanks for the help on the overclocking, hopefully I can hit 5 MHz.

Ok. Like I said, just my 2 cents. Anyways, well post back with your overclocking results. Looks like we have a similar system, so I'm curious to see where you end up. I'm still tweaking my overclock but right now I'm running stable at 4.8 GHz with the memory at 2400 MHz. My cache ratio is still at 40 so that's the next thing for me to try to bump up. I did run at 4.9 for about 30 min before crash. I plan on going back later to try 4.9 again but I don't think I'll end up there for a 24/7 overclock. What kind of cooling are you using? If you would like to check out my system I posted some pics and a video here. The hardware listed is my Ivy bridge system. I just got the new Haswell CPU, board, and bigger SSDs. Everything else is the same.
