New system will not boot, cpu_led always red, help plz

HI, put a system together last night and it does not boot up. My system is as follows:

- Asus Sabortooth X79 MB
- Crosair HX750 PSU
- Asus Geforce GTX 680 Video card
- 4 x 8 G Crosair Vengeance 1600
- Samsung 840pro 256GB SSD
- WD 2TB HDD
- Crosair H110 CPU Water Cooler

When I turn on the unit there are no beeps, all the fans, hdd, ssd drive come on. The CPU_LED on the MB is lit red, the systems turns on for almost a second and turns off. Then it turns on by itself, with the CPU_LED still on and no video or no apparent booting sequence.

I opened up the cpu to see if I bent any of the pins on the socket and they were all good. Applied the thermal compound again and reinstalled the H110. Same thing happens again, the CPU_LED light is solid red the systems shuts down as soon as it comes on and then starts up again and there is no video and CPU_LED still solid red.

Also, I noticed that on the two PCI-E connections on the video card there are one LED by each connection and the one on the left is lit red and the one on the right is lit green. I don't know if it suppose to be like that, there is no reference to the LEDs in the user manual.

I sure appreciate any help with this. Thanks

Hi pepelpue00 🙂

The LEDs on the graphics card are telling you that one of the cables (red LED) is not delivering power.

Just make sure you have the correct cables connected. PCIe cables and that they are well seated. If so there might be a problem with your PSU. Same goes for ATX 8 pin connection to CPU and 24 pin connection to motherboard...make sure the connections are good.

Now, the RAM you are using I'm afraid has a very bad track record on the X79 platform. Can you please confirm you have only one kit not two kits of the same RAM. In any case maybe you could remove 3 sticks and just try to boot with a single stick in the red slot closest to the CPU on the right side.

Thank you Arne. I will change the cables and see if that helps. If not, I am going to use my older 650W PSU, to see if that does the trick. As far as the ram, i bought two kits of 2 x 8G modules. I read the reviews on the newegg.com and they were not that bad, that's why I bought them. But I was not specifically looking to see if the bad reviews were from people with lga2011 motherboards, a bad mistake.
If the change is PSU doesnt help, I will try your suggestion of using only one memory module in the red slot closest to the cpu, on right. I will keep you posted as to the progress. Thank you again for your help. 🙂

How did this pan out? Are we sorted yet?

All good - mixed kits even if they have the same model numbers are not certain to play nice together sadly.

Thanks HIVizMan for the information.

Well, I attached my previous PSU, which I know is fully functional, and same thing happened: the CPU_LED light is lit red, one of the PCI-E on Asus 680 is lit green and the other to the left is lit red. The system turns on for less than a second and then turns off, and then on its own turns back on with no apparent bios check nor video output.
Do you think there might be a short somewhere. I checked the wires, all is good. Maybe the motherboard is somehow making contact with the case? I did not use any washers or anything to seal the motherboard from the mounting screw to the case, but I think that portion of the PCB board is isolated and is no big deal. Also, I dont think is do to any pin bending on the CPU socket(even though I examined it, and there were no apparent bent pins) since the LED on one of the video cards PCI-E inlets is lit red. Any suggestions? 🙂

Thank you Arne. Took out all the memory modules and only inserted one of them back in. I inserted at the first red slot to the right of the cpu. Same exact thing happens, with the video card led lit red and the CPU_LED stay lit red, the turning off by itself and turning back on. I think there might be a short to the board, so I guess I take the motherboard out of the case and try it out. That's going to be a pain, since I have to detach the radiator and its fans from the case.

yes, it is unfortunate but vengeance has not been good for a lot of people...and mixing kits is actually not a good idea. But there is one thing in your favour that the kits are 1600 so you might get away with it.

Just to start off though, with the troubleshooting I would use 1 stick.

And yes, substituting the PSU is a good idea. Let us know how it goes.

Pull your system from the case and use the motherboard box as a non-conductive test bench and see how it goes.

Just dropping by to ask which CPU are you using, my friend? I don't see it mentioned in the entire thread. lol Just making sure that we're not wasting everyone's time trying to get an Ivy-E CPU to work with your motherboard without updating it to the latest BIOS first.
