New system will not boot, cpu_led always red, help plz

HI, put a system together last night and it does not boot up. My system is as follows:

- Asus Sabortooth X79 MB
- Crosair HX750 PSU
- Asus Geforce GTX 680 Video card
- 4 x 8 G Crosair Vengeance 1600
- Samsung 840pro 256GB SSD
- WD 2TB HDD
- Crosair H110 CPU Water Cooler


When I turn on the unit there are no beeps, all the fans, hdd, ssd drive come on. The CPU_LED on the MB is lit red, the systems turns on for almost a second and turns off. Then it turns on by itself, with the CPU_LED still on and no video or no apparent booting sequence.

I opened up the cpu to see if I bent any of the pins on the socket and they were all good. Applied the thermal compound again and reinstalled the H110. Same thing happens again, the CPU_LED light is solid red the systems shuts down as soon as it comes on and then starts up again and there is no video and CPU_LED still solid red.

Also, I noticed that on the two PCI-E connections on the video card there are one LED by each connection and the one on the left is lit red and the one on the right is lit green. I don't know if it suppose to be like that, there is no reference to the LEDs in the user manual.

Yes that info could help.

But the red led on the card means something power related is not right. I don't think it's possible but can you make sure you aren't confusing 8 pin ATX power with 8 pin PCIe?

Do you have the cooler connected up right? molex to pump and pump to CPU fan header....fans to pump casing. is the pump turning on when you try to boot?

But the board out on it's box is a good idea.

Hi guys, I must be blind. I just noticed that on the 680 video card, one of the PCI-E inlet for 6 pin power connection, but the other is a 8pin. Once I connected the 8pin instead of 6pin to that, all was well. Both LEDs are lit green.
Took the motherboard out and tried it out. Same thing with the CPU-LED lit red and the turn off and turn on deal.


Chino, I feel stupid. I read about that on the forums before purchasing, but in the excitement of putting in everything together and try out the new system, I forgot about the update.
I do have an Ivy-E CPU, is Intel i7-4820K. You think that would cause it not to recognize the cpu and causing the system to act like this?
If so, do I get the new bios on a flash and inserted to the white USB on the back and with the system plug-ed in but not turned on push the bios flashback button? 🙂

Yes, use BIOS flashback to flash the latest BIOS the IB-E CPU wont work without it. http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/

With that and the right cable you should have more luck!

For installing OS I would stay with one stick (or at least one kit) of RAM for now and when it's installed try to add the second.

Awesome, I updated the bios and then turned on the system the CPU_LED is not red anymore. However, now the Memory_LED light is red . I am going to put the motherboard back in to the case and make sure that the memory is sitting correctly on the memory slot. If that does not help then I will change the memory module with a different one from the batch to see if that would take care of the memory problem.

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction....vengeance is a bit hit and miss with SB-E with IB-E you might have fewer problems...fingers crossed.

If in doubt clear CMOS a few times...

Thank you Arne. The system is up and running with no Red LED light on the motherboard. The only problem now is that when the system boots to window, on the screen where you enter your password to start the system, both the mouse and the keyboard are frozen. The both worked when I was in the Asus bios, changing the boot sequence but as soon as it gets to window, they both freeze!! I will try to boot to safe boot to windows to see what happens. Do you have any idea what could cause that?

Hmmm....not much of an idea on that...have you set up your RAM?....xmp in the BIOS? freezing might be drivers loading....might be RAM freezing up....do you gey into windows eventually? Is this fresh install or an OS ffrom another syastem or the OS from the same motherboard?

If it's from another system you would be best off doing a clean install.

Thank you Arne. It is from another system, I guess I should not be lazy and install a fresh windows 7, lol. The rams seem to be working well, I did not see any problem in the bios, then again I don't know Asus bios, lol. I tried to change the fan's speed in the bios, when I changed the cpu-fan speed to manual it said to adjust it in the advance setting. When I look in to the advance setting page, I don't see any place to change or adjust the system fans. Do you have any idea where to look for that in the bios? 🙂

Everything is cool now, except that my mouse and keyboard, both usb's, freeze from time to time. My old system did the same thing too. Both my mouse and keyboard is from the old system but I tried a newer mouse and it does the same thing too. Does anyone have any suggestions? 🙂

Well, just make sure you have the chipset and MEI drivers installed for the new motherboard chipset etc. and maybe delete mouse and keyboard from device manager so when you restart the drivers are reinstalled?

The fan controls should be in the Monitor Tab menu.
