Need assistance finding the limit of my 4770k(temps not a factor)

krhagene
Level 7
I recently bought this kit for my EK waterblock:
https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-supremacy-precisemount-add-on-naked-ivy
My cpu was already delidded a few years ago so I thought why not.

Temps before “naked mount”:

After:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9CyJiyzx3DlMmhkTFl2UnJoNFU

It's been really fun to overclock the last few days but I seem to have hit a bit of a wall on 4.9ghz / 1.44v. It's quite stable but not enough for 24/7/365.
Some documentation I’ve done:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9CyJiyzx3DlZ2w1M2xXQmg4S2s

I’ve been running “eventual CPU input Voltage” at 2.01 before on my other overclocks. But now I seem to run into instability no matter what, input 2.3v, vcore 1.55v, doesn’t matter after starting occt it fails after 10 seconds to 2-3 minutes. 4.8ghz / 1.4v vcore / 2.1v input seems good and ran between 4 and 5 hours occt stress test before it failed, probably needs a little bumb on voltage, haven't had the time to test more yet. It boots to 5ghz but can’t really do anything other than screenshot it. So my goal would be 4.9.

I’m a little uncomfortable increasing my input voltage above 2.1v. But if it dies, whatever, it will suck but I got money saved up for a new pc parts (cpu/Mobo/ram). Not sure if anyone has anything to say about where the limit is with the input voltage?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stats from my previous overclocks on this cpu:
(Input voltage : 2.01v 😞
4.4ghz / 1.18vcore / 4.4ghz ring/ 1.2v adaptive ring
4.5ghz/ 1.26vcore / 4.5ghz ring / 1.3v adaptive ring
4.7ghz/ 1.38vcore / 4.5ghz ring / 1.3v adaptive ring

(Input voltage : 2.1v):
4.8ghz / 1.4vcore / Auto ring / Auto ring voltage (stable)
4.9ghz/ 1.44vcore/ Auto ring / Auto ring voltage (unstable, kinda ok for daily use tho (5h of linpack was fine))

(Input voltage: 2-2.3v)
4.9ghz/ 1.4-1.5v. (anything above or below 1.44 makes it more unstable:S)

(C states / turbo / EIST / spread spectrum / and a bunch of other things disabled to eliminate instabilities when I’m overclocking.Vcore on manual. Most other voltages and settings on auto)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m not that patient with reading forums so if anyone has any ideas for previous experience I’d LOVE(!) if you could help me out. (probably get a lot of these “stupid” questions/ posts)

(I suppose you need some of my bios information may be, I can add that to the google drive, but what, my overclocking profile on a file or something like that?)

I never used Aida64 so I can't help with that and have no idea what to suggest. I do know running multiple monitoring programs can make readings go haywire, I wonder if that's what might be going on here?

Nah it just doesn't work with these versions of the programs. Its can give diffrent readings with diffrent versions. Like I remember on an older version of cpu-z the voltage reading was actually working.

I'll probably go back to OCCT tho I just wanted to see if these settings worked with a "easier" stresstest, since it actually booted on the low voltage i set just to see what would happen.

Oh ok

I use HWinfo myself, here is my 6700k and everything else.

The Ring clock is the cpu cache
The Bus clock is the BCLK

Click the picture a couple times to make it bigger.

Ah so your doing 200x 24 and you got the ring to run on that aswell, nice. Remember tho that on haswell the blck isn't uncopled with the system like on skylake. So haswell blck will affect pci-e speeds and sata speeds and everything.

Yeah you got it, I can get the BCLK to 300 but settled at 200 for now, I guess it depends what kind of mood I'm in if I want to run it at 300. 😄

But yeah I'm very impressed with your 4770k running at 4.8GHz and your ram at 2200MHz with cl9. It looks like you're all set except for maybe overclocking your gpu. 🙂

You should fill out your pc specs, you can do this by clicking the white circle at the top right of the page then go to inbox then on the left edit profile. See above my avatar "Nate152 pc specs", click on it, yours will show too once you get it filled out.

If you have any questions please ask, it's 3:00 am here on the east coast in the u.s. and I'm about to call it a night.

allright thanks for the input:)

You're welcome and hope to see you around the ROG forum, have a great day/evening whichever it may be in Norway.

Good night

Stable voltage in Aida64:
1.3v

Stable voltage in OCCT / actual stable overclock:
1.4v

Sigh

Having low cpu temps seems to have a much bigger inpact than I initially tought, especially on high voltage. I'm quite close to the voltage I could hardly use 4.7 ghz before and the only change is much lower temps.

So I'm done for now, ended up with:

Core: 4.8ghz , 1.4vcore, 2.1 input voltage.
(did 3x 30 min occt stresstest intervals with long / medium / short data sets)

Ring: 4.8ghz, 1.425 ring voltage.
(used Aida 64 cache and memory stresstest)

Ram: 2200 mhz 9-9-10-28-1, 1.525v
(MaxxMem2 to find the best timings, Aida 64 cache / memory test to find the voltage. Ended up doing cinebench runs to dial in the finished voltage.)

Cool ! I see you filled out your specs. 🙂

That looks great from here and you got the cpu cache to 4.8GHz too.

Play one of your most demanding games, what games do you play? I like far cry 3 and 4, the crysis games are pretty good, any game that uses the cryengine 3 game engine has good graphics and scales well with sli. The Dunia game engine has good graphics and scales well with sli too which far cry 3 and 4 are done with.

I pretty much only play CS:GO xD. I got a bunch of games on steam tho I'm sure one of them uses cryengine 3.
