Maximus IV Gene-z Gen3 and 3570k help! Clock intterupt BSOD after 2 months @4.6ghz

Hello, Ive been a long fan of rog boards. This one being the second ive owned myself, 8th that i have built. I picked up this board about 3 months before ivys release and shelved it. using my buddys 2500k i updated to 3305 bios and have been running beautifully @4.6ghz on my 3570k since may. Recently my system has been crashing at startup from time to time giving me clock interrupt secondary proccesser bsod. I dont know if i have caused this on my own playing around trying to get lucid virtu to work correctly or if my auto tune to 4.6ghz has proven too high. I havent done any deep manual overclocking since im very new to 1155 socket. After defaulting the bios the error has stopped for now. Ive been trolling rog forum since april for any posts regarding overclocking a 3570k on IV gene-z gen3. finding none and now getting strange crashes Im swallowing my pride and publicly admitting i nothing about these fancy new cpus :< i really am out of touch. my previous build was a rampage 1 extreme w/ q9650 @4.2ghz. My current build has some quality to it and should more than merit a 24hr 4.6ghz oc. Does anyone have any experience with this cpu on this board? is auto tune to 4.6 no good? ive pushed my buddys 2500k to 5ghz easy as pie on this board. i understand i cant hit these clocks on ivy and i dont mean to try. just looking for some tips ocing this chip to its potential.... and possibly heads up if i fried my cpu with auto tune. Some of my nicer specs for my system are as follows.

Case: Coolermaster Cosmos II (packed full of noisy yet wonderfully powerful Scythe case fines)
PSU: Seasonic 1050w
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 Toxic Edition x2 (both unlocked to 6970 cause i can~)
CPU: i5 3570K @4.6ghz (16 hours of Prime95 hasnt pushed my temps beyond 73c with my cooling solution)
Cooling: Corsair H100 Push/Pull 4x Scythe 120mm Slipstream 1900rpm fans (shaved off 4degrees compared to stock fans.)
Storage: Crucial M4 128gb(system drive) WD Caviar Black 2TB x3

P.S any tips on making Lucid Virtu not crash out my Mediacoder would be awesome too.

Not even going to go any where near Virtu mate. 😄

You have not mentioned what ram you are using.

The first thing I would do is download memtest86+ I use the USB stick verion 4.2.

Remove all but one stick of ram and stick the USB in and boot up.

F8 to select the USB stick as first device and the application will start automatically.

Once you have passed at least two cycles swap out the stick of ram and repeat till all your sticks have passed.

Now if your sticks pass and your ram was at the defaults of the motherboard, you might want to enable XMP profile and repeat the test.

One other thing I do is test each of the ram slots with a working stick or ram. That way I can see if the ram or the board are possible cause of error.

Thank you for the replies 🙂 Okay, ram type is CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Desktop Memory Model CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9. i ran memtest on all 4 sticks in slot 1 all passed test twice i then ran two passes on the rest of the slots. I have not yet tried it on xmp profile. i dont believe i had xmp on earlier. so far i seem pretty stable back at 4.6ghz. Oh i also was told by a asus rep at a computer expo not to prime95 a ivybridge as it could damage it. any truth to that? I will try memtest shortly with xmp profile loaded.

Well, if your cooling can not keep up... - I think, it depends on the temps...

Been running aida64 for almost a hour, temps seem to have settled around 62-71. I did alot of metal work to get a push/pull config using scythes 140mm fans that fit on 120mm fan headrs its pretty solid when ever the pump pushes them to 100% my temps drops to about 55c under full load in a matter of seconds. then work back up to mid 60s till they ramp up again. still running aida64 stress test. here are my temps im getting10138

Thanks for the information. Gonna go ahead and stop Aida64 and memtest all my sticks with xmp on. how does my temps and voltage look? havent had a single problem @4.6 since i defaulted the bios. perhaps i simply pressed something i wasnt supposed to in there when i was playing around trying to get quicksync to kick in. Thanks again guys ill post my results when i finish with the ram.

Cheers mate.

Yeah I am not a fan of prolonged Prime either. Does not prove to much to me. But hey there are a good couple of threads (one started by Zka17) where we really got into that discussion. 🙂

Try the XMP profile one stick at a time.

Then once they all pass. And lets hope yeah.

The two sticks at a time.

And finally all four.

I think, it's looking good... Vcore and temps are below the max limits... Enjoy your new setup!

Looking pretty sweet to me.

Memtest86+ is your special friend when it comes to getting your ram settings spot on.

loaded up xmp profile. auto tuned my ram up to 800mhz from 600 i believe. ran two passes of memtest with single, 2x, and finally 4x modules inserted. did a quick 10 min aida64 stability test and im still here. Thanks for all the information guys! I think im running pretty solid again. Pretty sure i just broke it playing around with this new tech. its a far cry from my socket 775 rampage 😛 I dont see much need to try and push my oc any higher but if i get bored i will be sure to look before i leap.
