Little Help (please)

Hey All-

I was preparing my rig this morning for a new water cooling system and I ran into a big problem.

I replaced my CPU with one I know is a bit less sensitive for overclocking that I had put aside for my water cooling. Once I popped it in I started getting some weird issues with the PC turning on and off. I was able to get into BIOS every 4 or five times after the computer would turn on and off. I noticed the debug code stopped at Check CPU. So I re-swapped CPU's. Same problem. I did a flashback on both BIOS. Same thing. I decided to hook up the OC Key just to check out the voltages. Everything seemed fine with the VCCSA but the Vcore was at .8 or so. Realizing this is not enough to power the CPU I decided to up it once I was able to get in to BIOS once again. After waiting for numerous power ups I finally got into BIOS and was able to up the VCORE. I got to the Windows splash screen but then it would just shut down. I suspect if I messed with some of the power states I could have fully gotten into the OS.

After pondering some, I came to the conclusion that this was either my PSU or the MOBO.

BTW- My CPU frequency is down to 1.2 GHZ. I can overclock into OS. Lol.

Any Ideas?

I would check the socket pins...

just did. reseated the cpu too. they both look fine. i also used another psu that's not the prob.

My guess is MOBO. I just hope nothing happened to either of these processors. They are both 3960's.

Got more use out of the OC key today than ever. Looking at my multiplier and vcore were actually kind of comical. I guess I could have it overclocked all the time just not in the mood to have more problems after I put a waterblock on and get my pump going. Lol.

Which mobo are you talking about?

I see... I was thinking about possible BIOS issues with same CPUs but different revisions... But now I checked that for the 3960s both revisions are supported since BIOS 1005 - so, I guess that's not a problem...

So, did you figured it out yet or still looking for some ideas (not sure how to interpret your post #5)?

Yes looking for ideas! Lol.

I have gone through all troubleshooting measures that I can think of. Hardware (PSU, Onboard stuff). I also checked the processors and socket pins and can see no problem. It just makes no sense. Unless there is some way to troubleshoot the socket. Very strange. I don't believe there is any way to reset voltages (which would be based on individual CPU's anyhow). I have gone all the way down to BIOS 1101 which is usually pretty stable.

I can't RMA the board as I bent the RAM EZ_Plug pins sideways (it still works).

Perhaps I will email ASUS. I doubt they will be of any help. They don't even read the entire messages and often reply to other peoples emails.

I have been messing around for a while with two CPU's. It's weird I can manage to fully get into the OS with Slow Mode enabled and the LN2 jumper set to on, with one stick of RAM (although I don't know what difference this makes).

My CPU frequency is stuck at 1203mhz. I am thinking this is the motherboard. Does anyone have any input on this?

TIA
