i7-8700K first time overclocking

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz -> Delided
GPU: Gainward GeForce GTX 1070 Phoenix GS, 8GB GDDR5
RAM: Gskill F4-3866C18-8GTZR - DDR4-3868
MB: ROG MAXIMUS X HERO (LGA1151)¨
STORAGE: NVMe Samsung SSD 960 250GB, Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB, Seagate BarraCuda - 2TB
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G3, 850W 80+Gold
Thermal Compund: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut
CPU Cool.: NZXT Kraken x62
Case: Fractal Define R6 Blackout TG

Hi, first time overclocker here. After following couple of videos on youtube how to oc, ive got:

CPU: 4.9GHz 1,320V (cpu is delided incase u didnt see it in specs)
RAM: DDR4 3866MHz 1,35V
ran AIDA64 and got 75°C max temp stable CPU clock between 4898-4902MHz.
other than those settings i dont understand and dont mess with unless someone experienced tell me to and what to use there.

After that i wanted to try 5.0ghz 1.35V, got instant BSOD never made it to windows.
Then I tried in BIOS "EZ Tuning Wizard" set it to gaming there and then BSOD never made it to windows.

So is there anything i can do to push the cpu more, anything to help me achiev 5.0MHz its my first time oc so i dont wana to mess some option that i dont know what is doing. Or i just got bad luck and got a "bad chip" that just cant go more than 4.9Mhz.

Hi and welcome, kappisto

That CPU can probably do another step to 5.0GHz, but think about whether you want to. The 'sweetspot' for a continuous duty overclock is the point just before the next step takes a very large increase in Vcore. Your CPU might be there already if it doesn't do 5.0GHz at 1.35v after being stable at 4.9GHz with 1.32v. The next step might take 1.40 - 1.45v. If you try that, watch temperatures carefully. Power rises as volts squared even when frequency doesn't increase. With 73C temperatures at 4.9GHz, that might be all the AOI cooler can handle.

so basicaly i got the "bad" chip from the chip lottery pool

Try the following: –


Down clock your memory to 3600.
Make sure SVID is set to auto or enabled.
In Vcore choose adaptive (+) and set Vcore to 1.36 v
Set both AC load line and DC load line to 0.01 in section "Internal CPU Power Management".


For the moment turn off Intel speed step and C states

so i made a new bios profile and tried ur sugestions, set 50 for all cores 1.36 adaptive+
made it into windows, tried cinebench crashed, multiple times, then intel extreme cpu stres test, made it 2 minutes then BSOD

Sorry to hear that. I would follow jab383's advice and do the following. Leave the settings the same as before, but switch to manual voltage and increase voltage to 1.4 or 1.425 and retry. Just watch your temperatures and if they cross into the 70s at idle, restart and bring down the voltages. If it does run at reasonable temperatures, stress your system and again watch the temperatures. If you're successful, you can then try reducing the voltage and rerunning the process.

so ive set 5ghz, 1.38 v, ram 3600 and got results below, tried intel extreme stress test which passed(but only 5 mins so..), but big but when i try to run aida, it bsod after like 15 seconds. I guess i will go safe way and dont provoke the chip more before he will be mad at me and die :D.
