I need advice for Ram combination on Asus Maximus VII Ranger

Hello everyone,

I need some advice on an upgrade that i am currently making on my system.

My current setup is:

Asus Maximus Extreme (the old model - max ram support is 8gb)
Corsair Vengeance Blue 2x4GB at 1600MHz / CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B (XMP enabled in Bios).

I also have 2x2gb of Corsair XMS3 / CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 (low profile). Same speeds and latency as the Vengeance.
But, i am not using these 2x2gb ram due to the 8gb limitation of my motherboard.

The rest of the components are irrelevant to the question i have for you.

I recently purchased The 'Asus Maximus VII Ranger Z97' motherboard which (if i am not mistaken) supports both of
these memory models, the XMS3 and Vengeance (please correct me if i am wrong).

What i would like to know is whether i will be able to use both of them on the Ranger motherboard in order to have
a total of 12gb of ram. That is, to insert at A2 & B2 (red) the Vengeance memory and the XMS3 on the A1 & B1 (black) slots.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Welcome jdj9 to ROG to the forum!!

No,you can never ever mix kits of ram, even from the same manufacturer.Ram kits are binned to work together hence 4x4,2x8, etc

Ram is cheap get some new for the new mobo

Dear Wolverive,

Thank you for your reply.

Okay i understand. What if i buy another pair like the ones that i already use?

I found that a local shop sells the exact same model (and serial number: CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B), with the same speed, latency and voltage.

If want 16gb, does it necessarily have to be 4x4gb in one package? Can i use 2x(2x4gb)?

Thank you.

It's not advisable to mix sets, even if it's the exact same brand and model.
If you want 16GB, then buy a 4x4GB or 2x8GB set.

A 2x8GB set would be better since it would put less stress on the CPU IMC.

Dear Nemesis,

Thank you for your reply.

Well i believe that it is not really "mixing" if they are completely identical but i value your opinion, since i am not an expert on the matter.

Do you know someone that had any problems with mixing identical sets?

Thank you.

There is potential problems if you mix ram kits even of the exact same specs, don't take the chance on mixing two kits, get a single kit of the capacity you want.

Dear Natel152,

Thank you for your reply.
