How many solid state drives can the asus maximus formula VII support?

I had 4 intel 730's @ 240Gb each and I added a 5th, suddenly the 5th ssd failed.

Is it because I have too many?

That shouldn't happen, did you switch them around to make sure it's not the 5th one that's defective?
