Hero + 4670k - Any Overclocking Fails

Hi,

I just bought a new motherboard and CPU and cooling and im having serious trouble overclocking this thing in any way shape or form.
As soon as I change any of the settings even slightly my computer wont boot and just gets stuck in a restart loop.
I have to go back into the bios and reset it to optimized defaults for it to work again.

My System specs are:

Asus Maximus Hero VI
Intel 4670k 3.4Ghz
Corsair H60 Watercooling
Corsair Vengeance 8Gb 1600Mhz
Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti
CoolMaster Real Power M620 620W PSU

I am new to overclocking so forgive my lack of knowledge but its really driving me nuts.
Can anyone help?

Hello Danny3388 welcome to the ROG forum. Give this a try. Go into the bios hit F5 to set defaults then go to the extreme tweaker tab and set the AI Overclock Tuner to manual. Sync all cores and set the cpu core ratio to 42 and set the cpu core voltage to 1.25v F10 and enter how does it go? If it does not go well I would say you need a stronger psu.

Thanks for the info ive now set that and it works 🙂
I tried similar core ratios before but with only a core voltage of 1.2v and it kept crashing.
This is the first time its actually worked thanks again!

I will look at upgrading my PSU I think soon, do you think that may be why I am having issues overclocking?

It could be, your system requires a 500 watt psu and that is for stock settings. When you start overclocking, your cpu requires more watts so I would say you are pushing your psu to the limit.

Ok so you were able to boot into windows. Did you run a stress test to see if you are completely stable?

Well the wattage is 620 but it seems its just enough for a stable system with no overclocking.
I think your right as I just tried to run a game and it crashed out as soon as it started to put more load on the CPU.
I will set it back to optimized defaults now and look at getting a new PSU I think maybe around 800W or something.

I have noticed issues previously where my graphics card stops working but then recovers itself.
I am now wondering if this is due to the PSU not being able to supply enough power to the graphics card and it too crashing.

A lot of people here recommend seasonic psu's. If you plan on using two gpu's in the future go with at least a 1000 watt psu. If not an 800 watt would be great for a single gpu.

I will have a look at them thanks for the info.
I will go with a psu around 800w as I only usually use one gpu in my systems.

I'm not sure if seasonic makes an 800 watt psu but I found an 850 watt. Some people might say a 750 watt psu would be enough but if you go with an 850 watt psu it will run cooler and quieter. Here it is at newegg.

I have been looking and I know I said 800, but ive found this one which looks very suitable for my needs.
